William Wallinder highlights 2020 NHL draft
2020 Scouching Report #13 - William Wallinder
PFR Highlights: LHD William Wallinder (2020 NHL Draft)

He's huge and can apparently skate:

Wallinder towers over the competition, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 194 pounds -- there's plenty of room for him to fill out that frame. He might be the most technically skilled skater among all defenceman in this draft. He's a great puck-carrier, eager to lead his team up the ice, and with a great deal of initiative in creative offensive chances. -EliteProspects 2020 NHL Draft Guide

I'm happy with the Wallinder pick.

Wings a couple of minutes away from their mid-2nd round pick from Edmonton. Mysak?

Guess the Wings didn't want him, otherwise they wouldn't have risked trading down 6 spots.  Wonder why he has dropped so much; he's still there for Montreal at #48

Is Hakkan the new head scout?  They drafted a center out of Sweden with their next pick (Frolunda!).  I remember from NHL stream: 5'10'', supposed to be a good two way forward, good hockey sense, was injured (groin maybe?) last season.

Looks like he got surgery, missed a whole season, and came back and played pretty well.

Three Swedes with the top 3 picks. LOVE IT! This has been a really phenomenal draft thus far. I am excited about the potential Wallinder has as a Defenceman. He's 6'4 but from what I understand is a clean, fluid skater like many of his smaller counter parts. He also appears to have an offensive upside if he can work on some technical things with his shot. He seems like a 1sr round talent we got in the 2nd, which is always a nice get.

Wings traded back at 65 to get 132 and 70, at 70: https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/499518/eemil-viro

His coach at the U20 camp:

Eemil Viro, D, TPS (2020 draft-eligible): “He was our best defenseman,” Pennanen said. “He was better than those older players like Ville Heinola or Santeri Hattaka. He was good defensively, he’s skillful, he’s a very good skater. He will play in the NHL someday.”

Drafted a goalie:

Pronman on Bednar:

Athleticism: 60 Hockey Sense: 55

Bednar is a very tough evaluation case. He has the 6-foot-4 frame and high-end athleticism that can make you a believer. On his best night, he looks dominant with the ability to steal a game at the NHL level. His ability to get to pucks across the crease for a goalie his size is fantastic, and he can make some real highlight reel saves. But Bednar can be a bit all over the place in the crease. He tracks pucks well through traffic, but his reads on passing plays are average, and he is out of position a bit too much. He has played against men for most of the past two seasons so he may have just been in over his head, but his consistency has been a significant issue.

NHL scout on Bednar: “The size and athleticism are hard to find. His reads aren’t great, but his tracking is good. He showed what he could do versus his age group more than when he played against men.”

a lot of their picks seem to value "hockey sense" over pure athleticism.

and then there's the goalie pick that seems to go the complete opposite way.

Wallinder seems like an athletic freak, I'm excited to see him play

He has a huge learning curve though. Might not see him for a few years.

I agree, reminds me of Antti Tuomisto from Yzerman's previous draft.  It looks like he skates really well though so I'm hopeful.   I don't think we should expect to see many prospects outside the first round any time soon.

especially because they'll all be playing in europe as it seems more and more unlikely that the AHL will play this year.
