The big miscalculation with the TX decision is.... does the Gov understand it takes a few weeks from the dose to be protected?  How many Texans had a 2nd dose, or even a 1st, dose 28 days ago?

Do you think he gives a ****?    Honestly?

Is it a miscalculation if science isn't considered?  This probably has just as much to do with trying to put the grid issue on the backburner as anything else.

At the end of the day I don't think it's going to be a disaster but I suspect cases will go up and TX was one of the 10 worst states in terms of rate anyway.  It won't be a bloodbath. There won't be skyrocketing but it will be worse than it needed to be and some people will get sick and others will die.  I would be more worried about the safety who still want to impose mask rules and didn't have the rule to fall back on.

It's all political. They want Biden (and the democrats) to fail. If it means sacrificing a few thousand of their poorer citizens, who cares? That would just be less they have to share. A total win-win for them.

Yeah, this is not ideal for anyone in a public facing position in retail or the restaurant industry. This past year has been tough enough as it is, and it just feels like businesses who want to follow protocol have been sort of abandoned / are not getting government backup.

One thing I worry about is whether there could be a counterreaction to the intended result of this decision (ostensibly to increase economic activity). I've seen a couple of people who were starting to get out more suggest that, with the new rules, they may hold back some or specifically avoid businesses that do not require masks.

I'm not sure that it's fair to businesses to be put into this situation when the alternative would have been to just continue the mask mandate another month or so.

From the feedback I am hearing, this is exactly what is happening.     Businesses are pretty unhappy at the state’s lack of concern for the safety and health of their staff.

But Abbott throws a bone at teachers by opening vaccine eligibility to them.  Which would be great except that we have such long wait lists already.   My mom is in her 80s, signed up a few days after my husband did.  He has had both shots and she has yet to get her first.  She was told earlier in the week when she called that they are just getting to sign ups from January 7th.

So I am wondering what the "sceince" is for me not being able to buy Pistons tickets?

VERY IMPORTANT !! *** The opportunity to purchase tickets to Detroit Pistons home games at Little Caesars Arena is restricted to the residents of zip codes in Michigan, Toledo, Ohio and Western Ontario) at this time. Residency is based on your credit card billing address. Orders by residents outside of this area will be canceled without notice and refunds given. We apologize for any inconvenience.

They want to restrict the limited opportunity to the local market.  Although I wonder how those Western Ontario fans are going to get back into Canada?  I don't think sporting events are "essential"

To be fair, I'm guessing that if you head south of I-80 or west of DeKalb, the same dichotomy that exists here exists in Illinois as well.

In general, there's a real urban/suburban and rural divide in how people adhere to guidelines on the virus. Seems to be the same all over

Even though I haven't really gone out there, I don't know if that's necessarily true. I have been to Green Bay, and to its rural environs, and have been surprised at the level of mask compliance in stores and gas stations and the like. Nearly 100%. Not saying DeKalb is the same as Green Bay, but it is really super Trumpy up there, so I was a bit surprised at the level of compliance.

Compliance is so great in Chicago that it is almost unusual to see anyone walking on the street without a mask on. I don't myself--when I am outside in the moving air and dozens of feet from the nearest person, getting within six feet only to walk past them for a fraction of a second, I don't believe I really need to mask up. But I do wonder whether they think of me as a Trumpy troglodyte when they see me without one.

Detroit declines J&J vaccine

Detroit has big enough problems convincing it's population to take the vaccine, so from that standpoint i'm glad these vaccines can get sent somewhere that they'll be used instead of storage, but WTF on this comment from Duggan

Quote

“The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are 95% effective if you get two shots. Johnson & Johnson is one shot, which is nicer, but it’s about 67% effective,” Duggan said at his Tuesday briefing. “Johnson & Johnson makes great sense for people in rural areas where it’s gonna be hard to get out to them. It makes great sense for people who are waiting three of four hours in line and aren’t gonna do it twice and maybe get one shot, (because) certainly the Johnson & Johnson shot is a step forward.”

He continued: “In the city of Detroit, you’ve got the finest vaccination infrastructure in the country. We can get you in and out quickly through the TCF Center, and we can do it twice and we are gonna protect Detroiters with a 95% vaccine. So it is my intention, as long as possible, to stick with the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and get Detroiters 95% protected.

The last thing any of our political leaders need to do is to get people to start trying to handpick which vaccine they get.

another 1500 day. Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne Co all above last week's averages - Mr Duggan's confidence not withstanding.

Well I guess we can put to bed the argument that "opening up" won't make cases go up.  Is it bad?  No.  I would like to see hospitalization data among age groups over time.  Maybe we're just entering the phase where it's younger people getting infected but not getting really sick.  It takes 3-4 weeks for vaccines to fully realize their potential so we should start to see results shortly from the increased efforts the last few weeks.

Duggan was irresponsible by making the comparison betwen the vaccines..  What he should have said was "We have all we need of Moderna and Pfizer with our apppointments already set up and we have the infrastructure in place for cold storage and all that so let's get those one shot doses out to the rural areas where logistics can be an issue and get those people taken care of as soon as possible"

Certain places here in downtown Dearborn look pretty crowded at night now... I was excited when a yemeni coffee house opened up a 2nd location on the west side of town but damn they cram a lot of people in there.  That's why we lead the county every day in cases, other than Detroit.

Welp. Took the day off work. Sat in a line of cars for 20 minutes, got to a checkpoint and they said if I have an appointment I can just park in the deck and walk across and only have a 20 minute wait instead of an hour. Wish there was a sign for that sooner but ok. Park, walked over, stood in line for 10 minutes. Got inside and was informed that there was a glitch in the system and I shouldn't have gotten an email telling me to schedule an appointment because I'm not essential. So I was told to go back home.

Thanks, Long Beach.

You gotta be quicker on your feet.  "I'm not essential, but I'm exceptional."  Maybe that can get you through the velvet ropes?

Now Abbott is blaming illegal immigrants of coming over here and spreading covid. He wants it to spread so he can blame Biden. Who in the world would ever want a disgusting pig like him running their state? Can't you recall him or something? Before his ignorance and racist acts kill half (or more) of your state? It's just mind boggling...smh

If these are being released by the federal government into the community with positivity for Covid, that is a problem for Texas that Abbott did not cause or contribute to.

Masks should also still be mandatory in public indoor spaces in our state.  The one has nothing to do with the other.

That sucks.  Seems like they should have gone ahead and vaccinated you since you were already there and it was their error.  I don't know how Long Beach handles it, but here if you get the appointment then that dose is designated for you and might be thrown out at the end of the day if not administered.  Unless they are overbooking?

It has everything to do with it. He could open the entire state up with mask mandates in place. Instead, he eliminates something that is proven to work against spreading the virus. And he said blames illegal immigrants for spreading the virus. Not immigrants released into the community while positive for the virus. Every unmasked person with the virus is going to spread it to other unmasked people. That's a fact. And he's going on the offensive by blaming Biden's immigration policy. Who in the world voted for this guy? It seems he must have hoodwinked every person who voted for him. He should be removed before it's too late.
