All I remember about Bip Roberts time here is that he threatened Kirk Gibson through Josh Lewin.   Gibson had criticized Bip for taking himself out of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series when he wasn't seriously injured (and of course the guy that covered his position that day made an error that led to the loss).    Bip told Lewin that he had his boys were looking for Gibson to have a word with him.   The next time Gibson was in the Tiger clubhouse he waved at Bip and Bip walked away.

Bip Roberts was a Randy Smith special.... Scott Fletcher.... guys like that.

We're seeing that today with Avila building this club.  Get guys who were sort of good sometimes 4 years ago.

Okay, I am not ready to put Al on that same pedestal with Randy yet.    I think Al is doing it more out of necessity than Randy.  I think Randy did it because A - they played for the Padres or Astros and he knew them or B - he thought he was finding diamonds in the rough.  I think Al is doing it because we need someone here while the kids grow up.     Besides, I don't see Jordy Mercer or Josh Harrison as downgrades that much.  They're alright.   Niko Goodrum looks like a nice find and all indication J.D. Martinez was Al's doing.     I am not going to really judge Al Avila until I see how this team looks in 2021 or 2022.  If he hasn't really turned it around by then, then it's time.  He was put in a tough spot.

“I have more analytical stuff than you can shake a stick at,” manager Ron Gardenhire said before season-opener Thursday. “But they didn’t send me a lineup. I didn’t get one. I’m going to talk to them about that. I want to see their opinion, not just percentages.”

The lineup Gardenhire went with is one that was mostly set early in spring training – Josh Harrison, Nick Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera at the top, and Grayson Greiner, Jordy Mercer and the center fielder (for now Mikie Mahtook) at the bottom.

It was the middle three that he was juggling right to the end. He settled on using switch-hitters Jeimer Candelario and Niko Goodrum in the Nos. 4-5 holes and left-handed hitting Christin Stewart sixth.

Again with Goodrum at DH.  Why?  The corner outfield defense stinks and if Mahtook leaves the game, and they have to move Goodrum to CF and then they lose the DH.  It doesn't make sense to me.

They presumably value Stewart getting time in the OF over the off-chance they lose an AB with the DH.

They could bounce Goodrum back and forth among 1B/LF/RF whilst allowing those fellows a game at DH.  The spot filled by the pitcher would be the 9th spot, so from that perspective, it ain't a big deal.  But, geez, they are in the thick of a pennant race and at this point every game from here on out is pretty crucial.

If you can't see the reason it's just further proof that you're no Ron Gardenhire.
