Directions and Objectives For A Future Mainstream Party

I was a GOP delegate years ago. I am still on the mailing lists. It’s sad and absurd what happened to the party at the local level.   You wouldn’t believe it if I told you.  With the serious republicans leaving it just opens the door for the kooks to move upstairs. Ronna McDaniel is not an accident.

I think a problem is that the gulf between the parties has been growing so wide for so long even before trump, that even for what we regard as a moderate Republican  like Mitt, it's just too big a gulf to bridge to jump to the other party like a Phil Graham or Don Riegle could years ago when they thought their party had left them. That takes away one of the natural constraints that has acted to stem party lunacy in the past - that of having elected members bail.

Sad thing is they will still have about 40 percent as a base.

I’m starting to wonder if there needs to be a movement toward ranked choice voting in both primaries and the general

And I still don't understand what they are so angry about.  What I mean is what real thing are they angry about?

trust me, it doesn't have to be real. I have more experience than I care to have had with people who persuade themselves that they are angry about things that don't exist outside their minds.

I guess the sociologists say it's largely the result of the atomization of modern life  - the geographic scattering of family, the decay of non-radical religious community as a social anchor, the ever increasing objectification of labor by American capital that destroys any sense of labor community, all have led to people having an ever larger hole in their psyches where the sense of belonging normally goes. Pitch a story to them where they can belong to some movement that sounds like it's about God and Country and that has strong us vs them mentality (and oh-by-the-way we'll cut your taxes because you know they are really only for the support those brown people) and people apparently line up.

Throw in a health dose of rhetoric from inside the so called “conservative” media bubble. The liberals are giving your job to one of the hordes or illegals streaming across the border, they are taking away all your guns, making it illegal to pray....etc...

If you live in Michigan, it’s the folks in Detroit are telling us what to do. In Illinois, all the problems are because of Chicago (all the way back before Mayor Daley, the elder.

In Virginia, it’s all the fault of those Northern Virginia elites

It goes on, always someone else to blame....

It's basically the conservative version of the "deplorable" comment, yet its basically just accepted and never pushed back on.

What is the end game of the people feeding them this stuff?  I usually blame the corporates, but they seem to finally be coming down hard on this nonsense.  Nothing makes sense anymore.

For conservative media (Fox, OAN, Newsmax, Sinclair,Saint Limbaugh and the “the conservative” talk hosts) it’s all about $$$$$$

No different than TV evangelists. They don’t care about their viewers, they care about the ratings.

Oh God, CNN, please stop. The Republicans are not “imploding”. They are in the process of shedding the virus of statesmanship so they can become stronger and pure.

Yes, this, but there’s more.

They also want access to the levers of power so they can push their own agendas, whatever they may be at whatever moment they have the influence.

which goes to why it is so important to keep religion away from politics. When politics is functioning, there is supposed to be a burden of rational empirical persuasion to move the body politic to agreeing with your positions. It short circuits the whole system when a preacher says the government must do 'X' because God told me so. When a political party aligns itself with religious concerns it a down payment on the death of democracy.

Moving the body politic with rational empirical persuasion sounds good on paper, but when has that ever happened? All you had to do was look at the chapter in your high school American history textbook telling you that Election Day during the first several decades of this republic were all-day parties where votes were bought with whiskey. That may not be the same tactic as your preacher example, but it surely had a simiallarly intoxicating effect.

That's from Death to 2020, a one-off thing on The Netflix. It's very much not suitable for delicate ears btw.

I'll seek that out.

It's quite British in places - it's Charlie Brooker. There's some excellent stuff in it though.

Oh, I'm pretty good with many British comedy things:  could prob quote The Office, Black Adder, Mitchell and Webb, Young Ones or at least pick up your drift on a sub ref.   Have not seen IT Crowd but think Richard Ayoade and Chris O'Dowd are a hoot when I see them in other things.

The IT crowd is worth trying. It's pretty decent most of the time.

Has Derry Girls made is across there at all? That's worth a look as well.

I saw a one-for-one copy attempted on US TV of The IT Crowd with Joel McHale of Community and Richard Ayoade tried to reprise his role.   It looked bad.

Eric Cantor finds himself on the road to Damascus, 10 yrs too late.

Quote

But in a democracy, the people are the ultimate source of power. Our elected officials work for us, and they fail us when they decline to tell us truths that we, the people, don’t want to hear. Even worse, they fail us when they set up false expectations we desperately want to believe.
