That team had multiple HOF players (Billups & Ben) along with 2 other All-Stars (Rip & Rasheed) and great role players (Tayshuan, Hunter, James, etc) and a HOF coach (Larry Brown).

Memo was an AS after he left, don't forget.

I miss watching that team play defense.

It really was something.  They sold out on defense with Tay and Ben and trusted Rip to make that little turn around curl jumper, Ben to get rebounds and Billups to hit the 3 and never miss at the FT line.

It was just a solid, well built team top to bottom.  They will never get the full credit they deserve because of the Horry shot.  We win that championship and it is 2 in a row and people THEN would have given them their due.  Beating San Antonio when they were as dominant as they were would have cemented it.  Beating the beat up/old/ struggling Lakers was not enough.  6 straight trips to the ECF was not enough.  They HAD to have that 2nd championship.

The 538 piece gives excellent points, but doesn't acknowledge Kennard/Bullock when they bring up backcourt imbalance.

I would think the statmeisters there would appreciate how many open looks they will get in the near future, but apparently two cost-controlled dudes shooting 44% from 3pt don't fit the narrative.

Why does Detroit get Keith Lawed even during basketball season?

so where does this put the pistons in the east this year talent wise?

4th?  5th?

cleveland, toronto, washington, milwaukee, detroit?

Looks about right, after adding Boston, pending health and nitpicking order.

Now that the initial excitement has worn off, I don't like this trade at all.

Huge risk with almost no upside.  I'm a gambler, I love risk. But the ones I take have a big payoff at the end.  There is no payoff here and never will be.  It didn't improve their odds to win a title at all.  It didn't improve their odds to build a team capable of winning a title.

This will not end well.

I would also argue that there are a couple stars in that picture, at least. Maybe not any superstars, but still.

In that vein, practically every NBA team has at least one star. But I think you know that the NBA is more of a superstar's game than other sports, and that superstars are needed to lead teams to championships. That 2004 team is just about the only NBA champion of the last several decades to not be led by a superstar. At least I can't think of any other since maybe the days of the Fort Wayne and Syracuse NBA. Maybe the 79 Sonics? Who else?

It it's sort of interesting to see how Drummond reacts now that he's no longer the prettiest girl at the dance.

I'm still haunted by Rasheed not guarding Horry.

I still can't believe they allowed that 3 and to Big Shot Bob of all people.  This and "It's a steal by Bird" and the phantom foul on Laimbeer are three fails in Pistons history that will always stick with me.  The Bad Boys could have easily won at least 3 straight Championships and not been an afterthought in NBA history like they unfairly are now but I digress.

I bet he is quietly thrilled. Drummond is in his 6th season, and has brought a different mentality to the court this season. I believe the guy wants to win, and knows that Griffin is a talent upgrade next to him. He also takes the pressure off Drummond in the short term.

Heads up for anyone who bought a Harris, Boban, or Bradley jersey within the past 30 days.

The NBA store will pay for you to ship it back and send you a new jersey free of charge. You can pick a different Pistons player, or the jersey of the traded player from his new team.

That 89 team is ranked as one of the top 20 teams in basketball history.

Sadly I purchased a Boban jersey 38 days ago for Christmas.

I bought 20 of them, so even harsher for me

As for Andre, I bet he was doing backflips when he heard about this trade

This trade has everything you could want in it. We got a guy who when healthy is a top 20 player, got something back for a player we were going to lose in the off-season, unloaded an albatross contract

So needless to say, I don't like it. Let's start with "too little too late". This has been under discussion for weeks apparently, needed to happen at least a week ago. It's going to change the way this team plays significantly so I have little confidence that we'll see the benefits fast enough that we don't drop too far out of the hunt, and then we have Reggie coming back which will be a whole other adjustment period.

I also don't like that we're going to end up having to fill the roster up with at least one if not two more wings...and with what? Another two G-Leaguers?

I like Tobias and will miss him but he and AB have been terrible since December. I just don't know what the long term plan is...heck, I"m not sure what the short term plan is.

That said, the move does give us hope. On paper, it's another good trade for SVGM. Nice to have a guy who is consistently efficient, create his own shot, and is the unquestioned go to guy in the 4th qtr. Haven't had that since before Reggie's injury. At the very least it changes the script. I really hope Stan has another move in him though (SJ for Hood ain't gonna do it) because I have a bad feeling we're gonna end up having traded away a lottery pick

On that basis, my goal this year is to just make the playoffs. I'm not worried about seeding or if we have the correct supporting cast or how can we improve the supporting cast.

If SVG/Bower figure something out this year: great.

Otherwise: I just wanna make the playoffs. We'll see what happens when we get there. And I wanna give a "screw you" to everyone... with a non-lottery 1st rounder sent to LA...

you know how much this trade moves the needle?  it moved the pistons forum ahead of the red wings forum on the mts home page.

Maybe Gores will start buying ads here for Platinum Equity.
