Wow, that first half was terrible on the offensive side of the ball. The stadium was super hyper with the two Kenny G touchdowns. Nice that the Lions won and had some guys like Kenny G step up. Running game was a disaster, how is it that one team can be so bad at running the ball for so long?

It's like the Tigers and their bullpen...crazy.

Good game, the updates to the stadium are nice. Slows-To-Go (the new kiosk and offerings) was not good (chicken nachos were fine, the pulled pork nachos were EXTREMELY salty). Overall had a blast and nice to finally see a team that is getting rid of the dead weight and putting the right people in positions of power to lead the team in the right direction.

Final thoughts, glad we won, glad some of the rookies played well enough for their first game. Run game still looks terrible, ST is terrible again, and I don't think this is a well coached or disciplined team still. Defense is getting results, not a huge fan of the offensive play calling and if it weren't for Stafford/Kenny G making some plays the offense was bad. But at least there is hope for the first time in nearly 20 years.

My 3 takeaways

1 - Teryl Austin is a tremendous coach.  His defense seems to play above their ability almost every week.   They really don't have that many good players, but they step up and play balls-out.

2 - The offense still can't run the ball.   They can't seem to get that right -  for 20 years now.

3 - Dwayne Washington should never be allowed to return a kickoff again.  Nothing to do with ability - all to do with F.I.Q.

I have to say Washington would be a serviceable return man. At least he didn't fumble. I think he didn't know the rules on the kickoff he brought out. The ball bounced, at about the 10 yard line and bounced into the end zone. I don't think he knew he could just down it. Why else would he bring it out from about 7 yards deep? That would just be stupid.

If you are in the NFL, you know the basic rules relating to your position. No excuses. And no excuses for the Special Teams staff for failing to coach him to take the knee and the 25 yard line of scrimmage.

I agree, no excuses. But this game, even in victory, exposed many weaknesses. ST were just terrible. Penalties and the running game also need work.

Also, Special Teams may get worse. Mlive reports Caldwell as saying Redfern’s injury is “significant”. Next week they may have one of us from MTS punting.

I would be more worried about a holder than a punter. They need to work on the timing with a new holder. 10 penalties for 100 yards? Half of that is still too much.

I'm watching the Dallas-NYG game and officiating is so bad.  Janoris Jenkins just got called for pass interference for not looking back for the ball soon enough.  Problem is the only contact he made with Dez Bryant was your typical hand-fighting.  The ball was way under-thrown and Bryant made no effort to get back to the ball.

What an un-Lions like win, wow.

Its ok not to do it after one game of course, but I think in a few weeks people will have to admit they undersold the defensive talent. The concern about the pass rush is still legitimate IMO, but the upgrades at LB and the overall depth are extremely helpful when it comes to us improving on that side of the ball this year.

Quick questions for anyone who can help (sorry if it was brought up earlier in the thread) but does anyone know why Tabor didn't dress? Is he injured? Or just not getting it done? I thought he'd be getting some snaps for sure, so I was surprised to see him scratched.

I don’t think most of the people who cover the team expected that Tabor would start right away. No injury I know of, just wasn’t on the game day roster.

They did suit up Jamal Agnew, who returned punts and (after Washington got pulled) a kickoff, and who was credited with a tackle. Don’t recall if that tackle was in special teams or if he lined up a bit on defense.

Someone will get dinged in the secondary and Tabor will get his turn. But he’s not going to have a key special teams role like Agnew.

 A few more thoughts

- Can Zettel be the new Hyder?

- No Zenner was disappointing.

- We have a LOT of weapons

- Run game did disappoint too, but Arizona was tied for 2nd in ypa allowed on the ground last year(and 4th in pass D for that matter, damn Matthew)

-OL protected Stafford as hoped against a strong(if weakened from last year) front.

It's early, but the Lions have the look of a team capable of taking a step forward this year... lots of weapons on offense, though they lack a running game. Tough schedule going forward, the Giants will be a good test for the offense.

I'm curious to see if the defense today was more about Carson Palmer and AZ regression than it was simply about talent. They looked sharp from where I was sitting, but still skeptical nonetheless.

Palmer sucked, but guys like Johnson owned us last year.
