2018 Draft Pick Watch

Recommended Posts

I haven't done much work studying this draft. From what I've seen and heard, there is no elite, can't miss guy that you absolutely can't go wrong picking at #1. Which figures to be the case when the tigers actually get it....

They'll be picking in the top 5 for  few more years.

This is regarded as one of the best drafts in the past decade.

Having the most pool $ and 3 picks in the first 75-80 picks is a very good thing for this org.

Yeah, if I understand it correctly, they can really maximize the haul by taking highly talented players early that aren't necessarily looking to break the bank and can get some of the highly talented guys that end up falling later in the draft because teams balk at the price.  I think.

But there isn't that clear cut number 1- at least that I have heard. I could be wrong on that because quite honestly I haven't followed it that closely. But even so, the ability to pool that many top picks in every round should be helpful. It would just be nice if they could get that impact guy.

It's not about winning the draft on draft day.  Retroactively win the draft a few season later with developed talent bursting onto the scene for your team.

No doubt. But of course, getting that generational talent can always be helpful too... such as a bryce harper.

How many times is there an undisputed #1 a year before the draft? I only remember a handful over the last 20 years.

Having a Bryce Harper type would be nice, but the top 3: Singer, Hankins, and Turang, are still very highly regarded.

Singer and Turang are already elite, Gil? No

Keith Law* has said there is a high risk Singer will end up a reliever and compared Singer to Jonathan Crawford, and that was not meant as a compliment

If Turang and Singer are basically a toss up come next summer, I would much prefer the bat over the arm simply due the injury risk that comes with pitchers.

You could probably say that about every nascent pitcher. I don't see the Crawford comparison.

Yes, sounds like a typical Tigers pick.

Obviously if the pitcher is significantly better than any available position players, they should choose the pitcher, but all things being equal I want a position player.  I hope this rebuild centers around position players more than pitchers.

Agreed, plus we've got a solid group of pitching prospects already anyways.

System is still weak on position players.

From what I've read, Brice Turang is considered the most complete position player right now. I think some people think that we're getting clogged at shortstop but I think they are missing the point, because most of these guys aren't going to be able to stay there through their minor league careers... And if a couple of them do, well, SS is a great spot to have a big bat.

I'm against college bats that are already DH types unless they're basically Frank Thomas.

I agree, though I have a feeling we take the Florida kid. Draft is a long ways out  of course

What a great day. I did not think that this would be possible even a couple of weeks ago. It's like 2009 in reverse.

I'm just so happy. It'd seriously be tough to wipe the smile off of my face.

Too early to dream on specific players, I think. Singer does not excite me, but a college season could change that. Change our perception on a lot of players.

Perfect Game has their top ten draft prospects avail to see for free. Singer is not on the list.

I believe the following analogy holds true?

The Tigs will also be given first shot at the Rule 5 draft as well.

This may allow another player (or even  two) to be put into the system... I understand they would have to be on the roster all year, but if the player has promise -  then they could put him back in the minors the following year.

It may take a little time, but things can change quickly in this game - just look at the Twins this past year (that might be pushing it - but point is things can change fast).

Stumpf was a nice pickup by Avila.  Another addition of even higher caliber would be really nice.
