White Sox won too. Gain tighter hold on second place. SF and Philly are both off tomorrow. We lose and we move into tie with SF and we own the tiebreaker. Duffy v Norris, so have to love our chances.

I'm not sure if the Tigers can get to 64 wins so that was a big win for Philly.

“Magic” numbers now at 2 for CHW, 3 for PHI, and 4 for SF. We also are now guaranteed of not picking worse than 4th.

Minnesota's magic number is 1 so unfortunately they may be on auto pilot by Friday.   I'm counting on our bullpen to be our ace in the hole if that's the case.

With the Angels' loss to the White Sox tonight, the Twins clinched.

Congratulations to your 2017 American League 2nd Wildcard team Minnesota Twins.

For those curious, we're gonna let Pedro's kid finish high school (start playing in summer 2018) and we signed him for $750,000.

  • Martinez Jr.’s deal with the Tigers includes an $800K signing bonus as well as $300K worth of U.S. scholarship money, tweets Dionisio Soldevila of Grandes en los Deportes.

Four games left for the tigers, and the magic numbers have been reduced.

Giants 4 (3 games left vs Padres)

Phillies 3 (3 games left vs Mets)

White Sox 2 (1 game vs Angels and 3 vs Indians)

We have clinched no worse than the fourth pick. We can clinch no worse than third pick tonight.

Losing streaks in September:  5, 1, 5, 1, 9.  Is this a pretty good poker hand?

I don't want to poker hand....

From the ESPN article (where my stuff came from) sounds more like a Pedro Sr. demand.

Olney had Keith Law on his podcast this morning and they were talking draft, with Giants and Tigers as likely top two.

Olney asks Law if there is a Harper or Stras type in the draft. To no one's surprise, Law says "there really is not and it is very much a high school draft which is probably not what the clubs fighting for the top pick really want to hear..."

He then spent a little time talking about Bryce Turang, high school shortstop from SoCal.

"Lots of tools but not the advanced bat you want at first overall pick."

Then onto... Kumar Rocker, HS RHP from Athens, GA.

"He is 6'5, 250lbs already. It's big league stuff right now. He's a high school righthander. We've never seen a HS righthander go 1-1. I think there is a huge industry bias against those guys. He might actually be the best player in the draft class. But I imagine when we actually get to draft day, whoever is picking first would go in a different direction, maybe try to cut a deal with another player, even a college player, save some money bc there is such a belief that high school right handers are too risky to go first."

Yeah, it seems like the biggest benefit of picking first is the extra money, with the side benefit being able to take your pick among all the players available that will give you the best bang for the buck.

If it turns out that you’ve got 3-4 guys you view similarly, you can go ahead and take the guy that saves you the most money, and then you can end up with a better guy at 2-1.

It worked out well for the Astros when they took Correa.  I still like Turang, sounds like he'll stay at SS; and he's got some wheels.

it did work out well with Correa, and then no one tried that method again until last year, when the Phillies took Moniak over Senzel at 1. That's looking bad for them, tho the jury is still out. As it is on the Twins taking Royce Lewis over Greene or McKay.

A lot can change btwn now and June, obviously. Turang's bat could take the leap, or better yet, a college position player busts out.

Since they traded away Justin Verlander, Tigers are 4-22, with a 7.02 team ERA! That would be highest Sept/Oct ERA ever & 2nd worst win picture

I don't think he'll be around when they are good again. But he really obliterated the roster and had the best outcome possible for the future.
