That's what amazes me.  The baseball team has had its stuff together much more so than the football team for years.  The baseball team has been the much better product lately.  And still, its a Browns' town.  Maybe that's a credit to its football fans.  But where are the baseball fans?  I don't know.

They've been beaten down to the point where they think every good season is a mirage. Trading CC, Colon, and Lee over the years has pretty much convinced them there is no reason to get emotionally invested in the team anymore because ownership will trade away every player due for a payday.

You know...kinda like what we're feeling right now, but for them it's been built up for the past 15+ years. They hate Dolan and that's why they still don't flock to one of the best current teams in baseball.

So freaking upset. I knew it was probably coming, but it didn't ease it any when it finally did. I've said it a million times, but there was NO return that could justify trading JV. This isn't a salary cap league, you're basically giving away the only reason to watch the Tigers because you don't want to pay him. Eff the Illitch kids. I dunno if any of these kids end up being good, I don't even care. It's probably no better than 50/50 that either will provide as much production as we'd get from the last few years of JV's contract.

I wanted to watch JV pitch the rest of his career in Detroit and then see the statue built for him. I don't expect I'll be buying tickets for a game the next 3-4 years at the least. And if that earlier mention of the DeVos family comes to fruition I will no longer be a Tigers fan period.

This is a sickening day to be a Tigers fan. And it doesn't even matter what the return is (which seems rather lackluster when you don't even get their top prospects).

if, in a few years, a leaner, cheaper tigers are competing for division crowns and sneaking into the post season, I suspect you'll have less of a problem with trades like these, which are absolutely essential to the health and future of a franchise

the Tigers were absolutely bloated with bad contracts, which made these moves necessary. It's sad, for sure, that the Tigers had to trade Verlander, JD, and Upton because they could no longer justify their salaries with the performance of the team. But it's reality. this is where we are.

Sure 3 years from now, IF they are actually winning again, I'll be happy for the current state of the team. But I don't watch the Tigers only for wins. I watch for entertainment. Winning is part of that, of course, but I've still made it a point to follow the team on JV days all season despite how awful we are.

So yeah, 3 years from now if this trade pans out, I'll have some entertainment to look forward to. In the meantime I doubt that I'll even give a second thought to opening day, let alone the rest of the season for the '18/19 seasons. And the rest of '17 is garbage is well.

This trade has essentially ended baseball for me for the next 3 years. At least we still have Miggy, I guess

I don't know if it's weak but it's uninspiring.

The pitcher is nice bit the other two are not very interesting to me..... which sucks because we need better positional prospects.

And I'm not suggesting that Avila should have gotten a lot more just saying that this isn't a very inspiring haul.

I'm sad to see Verlander go but I understand and approve of the trade.  The big league club has little reason to be followed for a couple of years though, and I'm not interested in repeating the frustrations I felt pre 2006.  I'll keep an eye on the farm system and watch when Fulmer starts.  Other than that I'm going to be checked out for a while.

Sadly, Miggie's bloated contract and declining performance played a considerable role in JV being traded. Hopefully they can find a good home for him next early year. He is now a liability.

There will be a JV statue at Comerica Park.  Along with a Miggy statue.

I compare this to the Granderson trade.  That was a smaller scale move but they sold high and got a great return that paid dividends 3-4 years later.   Did we get a Scherzer?  Maybe not.  But did we honestly think at the time we were getting a guy THAT good?  Probably not.

Yup.  And Martinez, and Zimmermann.

Verlander was the one guy that I wanted to see bridge eras, so to speak.  Now that that isn't going to happen, move whomever they can for whatever they can.

I doubt Cabrera can be moved this offseason.  I think he'll have to rebound next season in order to be traded, and even then, he Tigers probably have to accept that they'll be looking at mnimal prospects and/or will need to kick in money to move him.

Thing is with Max I had seen him already pitch at the MLB level. I saw his stuff make MLB hitters look stupid. Yeah, he had had some ups and downs and was far from established, but I (and I'm sure others) not only knew who he was, but had seen him pitch.

And even though Granderson was my favorite player at the time (and first jersey I ever purchased), he wasn't nearly on JV's level.

JV is a HoF talent, and the guys we got back are not even ready to help Toledo win yet.

I really liked that trade, and Scherzer, when it happened :P

I'm not sure 2017 Miggy is what we get going forward. Remember 2014 verlander?

If Miggie is healthy and productive, all the better. Maybe somebody will take him. I'm sure we're already going to pay a considerable amount of his salary anyway. Who knows, maybe he'll want out now and work his a@@ off to get in shape to improve his chances of being moved.

it seems you have a problem with the business aspect of the game. It's an absolute necessary evil to have to trade Verlander. You know that. There is no success without pain. Most people who watch baseball never get to see their teams do as well as ours has the last 10 years.

There is always a price.

I believe the Verlander trade is more difficult for myself and others because he was home grown and the heart of the team. He was a leader. The fact that we lost the most respected player in the org and are still stuck with millions of dollars of dead wood contracts doesn't help either.

Tough day for all Tigers fans, and I don't even care that Upton was traded today.

Good news in getting back three guys that will slot into the team's top 10, although getting another RHH catcher in Rogers after drafting two is a little tough to see.  At least the kid has some pop and patience at the plate.  He also fits the defense-first theme that AA has been trending towards with his acquisitions this year.

Ditto for Daz, who is good competition for Hill next season as they begin their climb to Detroit against/with one another.

Acquiring Perez here and Long hours before in the Upton deal adds two more guys who could find themselves in the Detroit rotation within 18 months.

AA has done a nice job since the end of last season acquiring replenishment and salary relief for the franchise:

SP:  Faedo, Perez, Long

RP:  Stumpf, Alcantara

C:  Rogers, Morgan, McMillan

1B:

2B: Lugo

SS: Paredes, Alcantara, King

3B: Candelario

OF:  Mahtook, Cameron, Rivera

Hopefully AA can get some value from Kinsler rather than just paying him to leave, although he will probably have to eat some salary on him in a trade.  Not sure if there are any takers on Iglesias for what AA would want in return.  Greene obviously has value, and maybe he's the deal sweetener to make an Iglesias trade happen for a real prospect return.  He's in his prime and just now entering ARB years.
