Quote

“Pelinka for sure knows how to tamper without getting caught,” one agent told me. “Pelinka will do whatever it takes to get players. Magic could easily have done something dumb and got caught for it, though.” The only difference between what teams usually do and this is that a complaint was filed, and the league must investigate. It’s possible that Magic slipped somewhere with an incriminating text or email. After all, he even went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and joked about tampering.

Crazy trade. They got more for Kyrie than the better superstars went for earlier in the summer and at the deadline. Danny was a bit willing to force it and Isiah has some question marks, plus you're trading to a rival, so I kinda get it, but it probably should have been a Boston first not the Brooklyn first given all else in the deal.

Let's say LeBron goes to Los Angeles next year. How does the league feel about that?

Your marquee player in your second largest market is nice. But your advertisers can't be thrilled your marquee player is tipping off at 10:30 on the east coast for the majority of his games.

I can't imagine they care. Not the first big time Laker star and its not 1030 where the games are broadcast.

You're thinking small. ESPN and TNT aren't paying billions a year based on local broadcasts.

They are paying based on what they can charge advertisers to run commercials during games on a national level. 60% of the countries population lives east of the Mississippi. West coast games have lower ratings, that's a fact.

As an advertiser I'm definitely willing to pay more if LeBron tips at 7:30 eastern instead of 10:30.

So just national games you mean?

Yes. LeBron is on national tv 27 times this year. It's well over 30 If you count NBATV games.

Here's the real problem. This current TV deal was negotiated with the idea LeBron was in the East. Him swapping conferences in the middle of the deal, with the price already set, could be a real problem if advertisers start to shy away.

It's even bigger than LeBron. A lot of talent has gone west lately. The best teams are in the West, although not necessarily the three hour time difference.

Maybe it's not a huge deal but I'm sure the league would prefer some balance.
