Better Call Saul - Season 3

Its a throwaway line when he says he's Irish someone says Saul Goodman is Irish? and he says clients feel more comfortable with a Jewish lawyer..... or as he says "member of the tribe".

Could be as simple as that, but I am thinking there is more to it.  He may just be embarrassed about the situation behind his changing it and came up with that as the reason.

Who knows.

Great episode. And had there ever been a longer cold open on BB/Better Call Saul? 8 minutes by my count.

1. Gus is going to cripple the **** out of Hector. Probably by way of Mike.

2. Mike's cold, dead stare after someone tries to be funny will never not be comedic gold.

3. Looks like the hearing is already next week. Any guesses as to what they're up to with the photos? That was a well-done con job.

What was on the paper that Mike found?   Safety deposit box #?      It's not about just beating Chuck now, it's about humiliating him.   And he deserves it (even though he's right) - especially after that extra $2.98.

All Jimmy has to do is say that he told Chuck this to make him feel better - he only admitted it to Chuck to spare him mental anguish.

My first thought was that Mike had a second key made for the door. Kim tricked Chuck into giving up there is another tape and where it is but that seems too much like a Jimmy move if the tape suddenly ends up missing. Mike also gave Jimmy a piece of paper that he got from Chuck's address book. Somehow I'm guessing that is involved.

Okay, as long as we are giving details.      I think the paper has the details of where the original tape is.   While they were at the hearing Mike replaced the tape.   When Chuck goes to play the tape in court it's going to be doctored to change the conversation (something added, subtracted or edited) or it's gonna be some kind of non-sense about his allergy to electricity which questions his sanity - in court - in front of everybody -   either way total humiliation.

I love this theory.  Without the tape it will come down to his word v my word like Jimmy said.  And even though Jimmy is a con man I think he can frame the argument by talking about RECENT events.  How he is working with old people trying to help them and Chuck is on the crazy train.  It MAY just work.  They need to get that tape though and that is obviously what they are working on.

I have no real clue what the pictures are for unless it is for proof of how crazy Chuck is with all the light switches pulled out. No one outside of Harold and Jimmy really know what is going on in the house.  They can always call Ernesto as a witness as well.  After being fired he has no allegiance to HHM.  It was a bad move on Chucks part to fire him.

I can easily see Jimmy and Kim framing the argument this way and actually after thinking on it for a minute I would be shocked if this was not the road they take to get Jimmy out of the bind he is in.

He can make anything up he wants about what was on the tape.  He just needs Ernestos cooperation.  Which should not be that hard to come by really.

Yeah they could have doctored the tape also.  I am sure it could be done back then, but it would not be as easy as it is now.  I am guessing Mike steals the tape has it doctored by the 'doctor' or one of his buddies and returns it.  The only thing standing in the way of that is if Chuck has it in a safety deposit box.  Unlikely considering his 'condition'.

The big question at this point IMO (because my mind is set on this being the outcome already) is what it does to Chuck. Does this inevitably lead Chuck to complete insanity?  Does he indeed die because of it....or does this lead to it?

I am sure it was hashed out in the first season, but I went and checked because I was still not certain if Chucks condition was real or looney tune stuff....looks like looney tune stuff:

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) is a claimed sensitivity to electromagnetic fields, resulting in negative symptoms. EHS has no scientific basis and is not a recognised medical diagnosis. Claims are characterized by a "variety of non-specific symptoms, which afflicted individuals attribute to exposure to electromagnetic fields".

Quote

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is not an accepted diagnosis; medically there is no case definition or clinical practice guideline and there is no specific test to identify it, nor is there an agreed-upon definition with which to conduct clinical research.[29]

Complaints of electromagnetic hypersensitivity may mask organic or psychiatric illness. Diagnosis of those underlying conditions involves investigating and identifying possible known medical causes of any symptoms observed.[1] It may require both a thorough medical evaluation to identify and treat any specific conditions that may be responsible for the symptoms, and a psychological evaluation to identify alternative psychiatric/psychological conditions that may be responsible or contribute to the symptoms.[1][30]

Symptoms may also be brought on by imagining that exposure is causing harm, an example of the nocebo effect. Studies have shown that reports of symptoms are more closely associated with belief that one is being exposed than with any actual exposure.[4][5][6]

Jimmy made mention of the picture with the gas lantern on the newspaper. Maybe he's going to try to say Chuck is unfit to live on his own and have him committed? The lantern on the newspaper shows he's a danger to himself.

1 and 2 - Yup, lol

3. It appears they're trying to use Chuck's mental conditions against him some how.

Don't forget that this all started because Chuck found it in him to leave the house and go to the offices at HHM only because Kim was going to land Mesa Verde and he didn't want anything good to happen to Jimmy, as always. To say he is right is short sighted. That does not mean Jimmy is in the right, but he retaliated, Chuck instigated. He's a piece of ****

The hearing goes so poorly for Chuck and Chuck's humiliation is so complete that Jimmy changes his name to Saul Goodman because thanks to Chuck the McGill name is now tainted in the legal community.

My slight slant on the opinions being offered is I agree the tape will be doctored, but would need to have some element added to it that explains / somewhat justifies why Jimmy got angry / stormed into Chuck's house because Hamlin and the personal protection guy were a witness to that and their testimony needs to be addressed in addition to addressing the tape itself.

What makes the most sense to me thinking on it from that perspective, is if the tape is embarrassing enough to Jimmy to cause him emotional distress, hence explaining his desire to destroy it as well as his agreeing to a deal in the misguided hope its' contents will not be revealed by Chuck.

So taking those elements in, I think the plan is to make it look like Chuck was blackmailing Jimmy into quitting law, and with that explanation, the doctored tape implicates Chuck.

Or there is just a bunch of electric sounding noises on it and Chuck has a freakout.

I'm not sure I buy the tape being doctored theory. For one, they'd have to record new audio in a room with the exact same acoustics and distance away from the recorder, not to mention having a newspaper on top of the recorder... it will be difficult to duplicate these conditions exactly and you might think they don't need to but the ear will absolutely notice any variance.

Also, how are they supposed to find this tape? That could be what was on the piece of paper, but that seems way too convenient. I have a safety deposit box and I don't keep its location written on a piece of paper on my desk.

Based on the photo of the lantern on the newspaper, it sounds more like they're trying to discount Chuck in other ways.

Having said that, I have no idea why else she'd be probing to see if there was a duplicate.

Dr'd or simply change it completely or just destroy it, but to me I think there needs to be something on that tape that will discount Chuck.  I do not think it would be that hard to duplicate the conditions.

I am guessing there is a combination written on the paper.  I am guessing Chuck did not have a safe before and when he told Kim he had it under lock and key Jimmy told Mike to look for a new key or a combo written down on something because he would have done that with a new safe.

Trust me on this. It would be extremely hard to duplicate those settings without knowing the exact setting (muffling of the newspaper over the mic) and any difference would absolutely jump out to anyone listening. But it's tv and I suppose they don't have to be that technical for the sake of telling a story.

If I had a valuable tape I'd make a few copies and put them into a few places, such as my lawyer's office and onto the cloud. But again, TV.
