Time to give up on Sanchez?

Recommended Posts

I don't think there is much else to see anymore.  There was that faint glimmer of hope in spring training, but it appears to have been nothing more than a mirage.

Think they could trade him for Leonys Martin?

I'd rather just go with a combo of Mahtook/Collins/Romine than take on another project like Martin.     Plus nobody wants Sanchez.........no way.

They HAVE to be done with him at this point right?  You cannot just brush this off as bad luck or something.  He has been BRUTAL.  If he gets another shot it better be in a 10-2 game again and if he fails to get out of it again then I would guess that is it.  I think he is done now and should be gone, but I imagine they are giving him one more chance.

Tomorrow is the time to cut Sanchez. Pay him his money for this and next and release him.

I would call up Stumpf

he is off to a nice start. His walks and HR against weren't great in ST, but his K and H/9 were good in Spring and have stayed good in Tol while the walks have gone down. Could be a 4A guy who can't get out big leaguers but it looks like they won't find out much more at Toledo, where he is hardly being touched. Even if they can't find the nerve to pull the trigger on Anibal, Ryan has to be getting close to the end of his rope...

With stumpf on the 40 man, it is almost assured that he will get a call up at some point this year, if only as a fresh arm after a stein of heavy bullpen use by the ML team.

As for Sanchez, there is an interesting roster rule that prevents a player from being DFA'd if the corresponding move is to recall a guy that is already on the 40 man but on optional assignment

Presumably, if the Tigers replaced Sanchez today, they would not be doing so and adding a new guy to the 40 man roster, because you like to avoid putting people on the 40 man if you can.

Obviously there are ways around this. For one thing, you could just release him, but you have to have him clear release waivers first. That takes a couple days. You could DFA him for a guy coming back from the DL. I might keep an eye on Iglesias's return date for that reason. Although by then they could have had him clear release waivers.

basically, if they decided yesterday or today that it was time for Sanchez to go, they can't cut him today unless they decided to add someone else to the 40 man in doing so. That would be fine if they definitely wanted to add this other guy, but it would make more sense to simply put him on release waivers and wait a couple days.

In 2013 Sanchez was missing 12.6% of bats....since then he's been sub-10%, which is dangerous territory for someone with a FB% that has jumped from the mid/low 30's to the mid-40's.

In 2014 he succeeded with a sub-10% swing/miss ratio because he had great control (2.14 BB/9), produced a lot of GBs (45%) and had a miniscule HR/FB ratio of under 4%.

Since 2014 his FB% jumped, his K% dropped, his HR/FB ratio jumped, his velocity dropped, and all of the secondary pitches that he was so good with in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (splitter, slider, sinker, curveball, change) have become ineffective or junk.

Seems to me that if he has a chance to reinvent himself as an effective reliever, he should focus on two secondary pitches: the sinker for groundballs and one other swing/miss pitch.

Again, you never know what might happen down the road, but it seems ridiculous for the Tigers to keep him on the roster anymore.  He is a severe liability on the mound.

I would try Chad Bell as the long reliever. The only bad thing about it is you lose him as a  replacement starter.

We might be getting more out of VerHagen than it looked like we would in ST though, which might make up for Bell's loss from that role somewhat.

I sort of wonder if a DFA'ed Sanchez would accept a minor league assignment.  Let him pitch every 5 days at AAA and see if his "mechanics" get better.  Could be helpful during the late summer to have another decent starter available if Sanchez has anything left in the tank this year and just needs to throw a ball dependably every 5 days to get back to that.

Or, maybe the Padres can turn their season around with Sanchez to help finish out their 2017 season instead....lol..

I got my wish, just it wasn't Sanchez that was sent down. Hopefully, Bell will unseat Sanchez as the long man.

Sanchez actually looked like he had a pulse last night. There was a little life on the fastball and some bite on his secondary pitches.

Maybe he needed the calendar to flip to May?

If he could just find it for a couple months he would be such a lift for the bullpen. A decent guy with the ability to work multiple innings is exactly what they need to bridge the gap between starters-J Wilson.

He needed to survive April and get to the warmer weather of May.

Best of luck to Anibal in the future.   Always a pro.  A class act.

A bittersweet day to be sure.

This is shocking.  It looked like he had turned it around in his last game.

OK I smell a rat now.  There's nothing in the news about Sanchez, and according to Gameday he's sitting in the bullpen right now, and Gameday never lies.  I swear to God MCS, tiger337 and Shelton, you ba******, if you are just f****** with me...well, I have a long memory OK?  That's all I'm saying, I have a long memory.
