Gervin was fun to watch.

My high school Spanish teacher claims that he once lost a roster spot to Gervin back in the day.

The guy could really play, think white John Lucas.  All lefty, 110 mph, all the time.  Lightning first-step, deadly pull-up J out to 17'.

He would tell his classes at the start of each semester that any student lucky enough to beat him one-on-one would get an "A" for the semester.

Nobody bested him during my four years.

Cool story Mickey.  I remember Gervin canning a hook shot from the right corner running full tilt as he ran out out of bounds across the baseline (not sure they had 3s back then).  Unreal.

In 1974 I had a teacher (auto mechanics) tell us if we thought we had a fast car to bring it - 1/4 mile - 50 bucks, and don't bring nothin' but 2 twenty's and ten. Nobody beat him.  Back in those days cars had "points" and on GM products you could use a dwell meter to set the gap.  He would bet beers he could set them by eye - then start the car and he would be within 1 degree.  He won every time (we always went to the bar after class (night school)). Great fun and memories.

Gervin was such a unique player, in terms of go-to--and apparently circus--shots.

It is guys like your auto mechanics teacher that remind us all that sometimes the difference between a man at the top of his field and and the local big fish can be a razor's edge.  Or life choices.

He was the best teacher (in that field I ever had).  He know his **** and taught us accordingly.  I appreciated that, and it served me well while I was in that field.

Not to go to far OT; but a Paul Harvey rest of the story.

Many years later, maybe mid to late 90s, I got tee boned by a guy and it totaled my truck.  They towed it to some body shop.  The adjuster showed up and looked at it; then called me and said it can be fixed.  I had my doubts (cause I wasn't some run of the mill dummy who knew nothing about cars), so I went to the body shop on my way home from work to get a better look.  Who was the service manager?  My old teacher Gary.  Hadn't saw him for years but he remembered me.  I told him what was going on, he laughed and said "they don't know who their trying to screw do they."  Nope. It was nice to have them on my side (I had to fight it), but I knew he had my back.  I got a new truck. :-)

Now that is a great rest of the story!

Along a similar vein, my cousin had a teacher that missed out on making the US Olympic Swim team by a tenth of a second.

I was talking to a hockey coach that starred for the University of New Hampshire in the late 70's when they were a powerhouse.  UNH played Minnesota in the NCAA semi-final and lost 4-3 despite outplaying the Gophers pretty badly, who then went on to win the championship.  It was tough to accept and he said the guys get together once a year roughly to reminisce.

He said the only good thing about losing to Minnesota is that Herb Brooks was the coach of Minnesota and winning the NCAA was the springboard that got him the US Olympic Team head coaching job for the 80 Olympics, and that turned out ok.

NH takes their college hockey incredibly serious.  I watched a bar fight happen (about a decade ag) after a University of Boston fan pressed his luck with a few UNH fans in Concord, NH.   The Masshole   knew exactly which buttons to push, it was pretty amazing.
