for you people who might have seen this movie...Lagaan.

Quote

set in the Victorian period of India's colonial British Raj. The story revolves around a small village whose inhabitants, burdened by high taxes, find themselves in an extraordinary situation as an arrogant officer challenges them to a game of cricket as a wager to avoid the taxes. The narrative spins around this situation as the villagers face the arduous task of learning the alien game and playing for a result that will change their village's destiny.

This scene is after two very tough sets and it appears the villagers will be absolutely destitute if they have to pay an increased tax on their crops.   They appeal to their deity.

I imagine a very similar scene in the Tiger clubhouse last night.

You know the Tigers have made great strides when even Stanpapi has become a sincere optimist. Maybe because they smashed so many of his predictions. 86 wins with 1 or 2 to play after they were supposed to be a .500 team at best, just won 2 of 3 from Cleveland when getting swept should have been expected based on the season series from earlier in the year, and playing a meaningful game the final day of the regular season when the season was proclaimed over around 6 weeks ago.

Unfortunately I don't share Stanpapi's deeply-felt positivity, I'm disappointed the Tigers are in this position. But let's see what happens today. I do dare to hope we may still be in contention tomorrow.

We sadly lost 2 out of 3 to Baltimore, 2 out of 4 to Minnesota, 2 out of 4 to the whitesox, 2 out of 3 to KC, all in September. I made predictions based on our remaining schedule at the AS break and predicted maybe 85 wins. This astounding tiger team has so far smashed my prediction by 1 whole game. I am proud to be proven so wrong. And very happy we are positioned so well on the final weekend of the season. I've found religion. This is a great team. Why wouldn't one be optimistic? I mean, this is the atlanta braves. Everyone knows they are in the tank, even though they had a better record than we did in September. But they are going to completely roll over for us, particularly in the last game in their stadium. And Toronto is going to get blown out today in Fenway. David Price will pitch a complete game shutout. The Indians are going to be so annoyed that they have to play tomorrow that they will probably put forth no effort. These are all very realistic and optimistic expectations. The tigers will roll into a game to be considered to play in a game to possibly get themselves into the playoffs, as long as another team conveniently loses today. I am so happy to be proven so wrong.

Oh come on. Stop being so negative. Get on the train.

I do enjoy the rich irony of the one of the more caustic posters with one of the more ****ty dispositions calling out one of the more approachable posters with one of the more mellow personalities an #######.  I mean, that's just pure gold.

How do you block people on this site?

If you click on their name, I think it brings up a window to block that person.  I think you have to save it or click something's else after that as well.  I forget exactly how I blocked Sunshiney Lee, but it was something along those lines.

That's interesting. The censor for the board worked for you. Funny how it didn't work for me last night.

No matter. I've turned over a new leaf. I'm purely positive here. No more complaining. The sun is shinning today and we are going to do this.

Anyone that suggests the tigers can't possibly do this (and did so as early as the all star break) has to be flat out delusional- I mean, there's no way they are going to miss the playoffs!

No, saying they can't finish above .500 (which you did in May), and then saying they can't win more than 85 (which you did in June), and then calling himself a "realist" is delusional. But keep feeling sorry for yourself.

Hey, they've exceeded my expectations. they've won 86 games and may only need to win like 4 or more straight to get into the ALDS. That is by any measure, unbelievable success. I must have been delusional to be so negative at the time when I only predicted 85, because here we are at 86 wins and only need every single domino to fall the right way to get into some real playoff games. Thank you for correcting me. And while I am handing out thank yous....thank you to Brad Ausmus for playing Mike Aviles all those games this year. I have no idea how he isn't on a major league roster right now. It seems like someone could use his talents. Big fan.

Go Tigers!

Keep feeling sorry for yourself, mister realist.

Why are you being so negative? I mean, it's truth. I was wrong. They've won 86 games. I only predicted 85 (3 months ago). I was way, way off. And our positioning couldn't be better right now. We are playing meaningful baseball and have an incredible chance to be playing deep into October. Just enjoy the long ride!

I like being positive. This is a great 200M team on the cusp of having the chance to get into a game to get into a game to get into the playoffs. We should rejoice. Frankly, It's depressing to be criticized for being right all the time. So I will refrain from pointing out that I was right. We are going to do this! rah rah tigers!

The payroll is deceiving.

They have a ton of $$$ tied up in a few guys. They also have a ton of dead money. 16.8 to Sanchez, 8 to Pelfrey, 5.5 to Lowe. That's 15 percent of the payroll to guys who contribute absolutely nothing.

Castellanos, Iglesias, McCann, Norris, Fulmer, Boyd, Wilson, Wilson, Rondon, Romine, Greene, Collins, Salty are all minimum guys basically.

Could win 88. The difference between 85 and 88 in MLB is actually pretty big. But keep feeling sorry for yourself.

You certainly have better chance of being right if you predict 88 while sitting at 86 wins with possibly two games to go. I applaud your willingness to go out on such a long, long limb!

I agree, it's deceiving. I'm sure if I was actually paying it I would find it deceiving too. But fortunately I am not.

Great! You're almost there. What a realist!

Unfortunately, 87 would mean we'd miss the playoffs. But I'm sure that's not what you meant. I won't hold it against you though- Go tigers!
