Verlander is going to get pissed again that Henning keeps trying to trade him, especially since he can veto any trade.

Verlander's 10/5 rights are a moot point.  He is not going to be traded because Illitch would never agree to that.  We are a contending ballclub that was a few bad breaks away from be a playoff team in 2016.  And we are virtually the same team going into 2017.  Verlander is going nowhere.  Almost certainly neither is JD.  We are not in the position where we have to trade away our top assets for prospects, we are chasing a championship.  And if for some reason we did have to pare payroll, it wouldn't be by a lot, which would likely then mean we don't exercise the Maybin option and maybe also on K-Rod (unless we find a taker for Pelfrey, Sanchez, or VMart).

Henning can stir up trouble with his nonsensical articles, but he's completely off base like normal.

Why would JV necessarily veto a trade? Don't forget he now has an SO whose work interests are all on the coasts, Does he have any business interests tying him to Det?

Well his foundation for one.

And this isn't 1932, they have these things called planes. People can travel vast distances in them in short times. Let's not forgot the relationship has worked for how many years already? (not to mention Kate's family in Michigan). And how many celebrity/sports couple do we see that aren't necessarily in the same town some/a lot of time. It's many of them now a days.

all true enough, I just wouldn't put too much stock on any athlete being particularly wed to where they play other than those that actually live and/or grew up in it like Mauer in Minneapolis. They are not dumb, they all say nice things about loving their local team and fans, but you never know how serious any of them are about any of that. I think most guys who veto trades do it more because they like their teammates and have a comfort level where they are than because of the particular place where they are playing. If they get uncomfortable or start thinking their team mates are jerks, that will be more important to them than whether it's Detroit or NY or LA or Seattle. Plus a guy who is already as polished as JV might have his own media ambitions that would be served better somewhere else.

I hope he likes playing here but who knows.

Seeing lots of writers/voters putting JV as their CY young pick. None of these are voting on that particular award, but I do think it is somewhat good that their vote would have gone to him.

It's such a close race. I think JVs K numbers could be enough a tiebreaker of sorts. Wins still carry weight, but less so than before.

Speaking of Verlander he ended up finishing 1st in WAR for pitchers in all of baseball.

Don't think he will win it because he kinda flew under the radar all season but it would be a nice consolation prize for this season if he won another Cy

#1 in WAR, WHIP and Ks, most IP among those in contention, .04 behind Sanchez for the raw ERA title but almost 1/2 run *ahead* of Sanchez and #1 in ERC,  - he really should have as good a shot as any one. One run in his last ~16 innings was a good strong finish for him.

Congratulations for correctly predicting the team wouldn't play 0.600 ball over a 30 game stretch.

The fact they did not does not somehow mean it wasn't possible for them to do it, however.  They could have very easily gotten another 2 wins in that timeframe.

I accept that they were 14-14 in September but wonder how that occurred. Upton played out of his mind in September, Cabby got very hot at the end, Ver stayed hot in September. Norris was strong. Yeah, Casti was out, Greene was bad, KROD blew the KC game, Zim had the bad start agst Balt. But the good stuff seems to outweigh the bad, doesn't it?

Given that baseballs off season is winter I don't think players put much stock in where they play relative to where they "reside". During the season they are rarely home or have free time. During the off season the super wealthy like JV will be someplace warm. I imagine their off season goes like this: first few weeks just chill and clear the head. Take a vacation. Mid november start working out again. You got the holidays. Then in early January you get serious and by the end of the month you are at spring training site working out already.
