The two teams could have creatively participated in an insurance policy. Perhaps.

what Obs/Bigg/Ramage/and I are trying to point out however is is that there is really nothing for Detroit to insure. We get no income as a result of Prince playing nor suffer any loss when Prince goes down, only the team he plays for does. That is what I was trying to get at with the analogy of a note for work you did on a house you sold. I don't care if that house burns down - it no longer affects affect my assets or liability.  The house's buyer will insure it (which now includes what ever work I'm still paying the bill for) because he is at risk for something happening to it.

I think it is probably more accurate in this case to think of the money Detroit is paying Texas as an instalment payment to buy Kinsler.

Probably the only way Detroit could have been insured insured would have been for Texas to get coverage for his whole salary including Detroit's portion and then they could have participated part of their coverage to Detroit in event of a claim. Longshot, I know.

No one said he wasn't going to go through any physical therapy. Of course he will.

The topic was regarding whether he would be expected to rehab toward an ability to play baseball again.

Those are two completely different types of rehab.

Did he get an MRI yet?

Insurance is not a way to avoid loss.  It's a way to spread the cost of a **potential** killer loss out in a way that makes it more affordable/budget-friendly.

In the case of Fielder's contract, the killer loss is the payment of a contract to a player that doesn't help you sell tickets/make $$.

That worst-case scenario was already in place when they traded Fielder and ate a portion of the contract.  The damage is already done, there's nothing left to insure, because they cannot possibly make any money off of Fielder's contract, so they cannot lose anything further either.

Put another way, from the insurance company's standpoint, they would never provide an insurance contract to the Tigers, since there is no "insurable interest" in Fielder's "dead" contract for the Tigers.

An "insurable interest" ensures that an insurance policy is not simply a criminal incentive.

A Tigers' policy for Fielder's "dead" contract might not even be legal (even if you could find an insurance company stupid enough to grant such a policy), since the Tigers would have only an economic interest in seeing Fielder get hurt and have his career ended sooner rather than later.

For nearly every Tiger position player since 2006 I can come up with a big or special moment.... for Prince I cannot. Is there one I am missing?  Besides falling down on the bases in 2013 and 2012?

I can't think of anything.  For a guy with so much hitting talent, I did not find him very fun to follow.

strangest thing about Prince was why such a big strong guy wanted to use such a tiny bat. He had to be more limited by the ability to move his body any faster than he was by that toothpick. Didn't make much sense. I wouldn't be surprised if too much turn speed from too light a bat didn't contribute to his neck problem
