His defense has declined compared to other CF. The speed is still there, so I think he'll still be a good defensive left fielder who can back up in CF. He's not that good, but he's the kind of outfielder Avila was hinting they would pick up, so it's not too disappointing. I like that it's just $6.5 million guaranteed.

Barring a blockbuster trade, I think this is what they'll go with for position players. How much money do the budget scolds think they have left for pitching?

The budget scolds are busy kicking over the water cooler in the employee break room right now over wasting $6.5 million of the budget on Maybin. They will get back to you after the maintenance crew has cleaned up.

This is a tough one. They gave up nothing to get him, and for 1 year 5.5m, he's a useful player. But he doesn't really fill a need unless (as others have said) they also acquire a fulltime LF.

For his career, he has a 691 ops v rhp, 645 against lefties. So, he's fine as an unsexy platoon partner for Gose, but he's basically making (Per year) what Chris Young or Davis will make and they can really mash lefties.

And he does us no good to pair with Collins, who really cannot hit lefties.

Seems like a waste of very limited $. Too bad.

I'll also add that SF declined a 5.5m option on Aoki, who I'd much rather have in LF.

Ha! Maybin is back! This exactly what they needed for the OF, a RHH guy for LF that can backup CF as well. Considering the money coming back, it's 1 yr $6.5M guaranteed, and you can keep him for 2017 for $8M. He's still young so you never know

As lee said, his CF defense has gone down, but there's a lot of good CFs out there driving it down (it's a zero sum game), so it'll probably play up in LF.

I'd still like them to upgrade from Collins, or at least sign someone for competition (for both him and Gose), but that would probably happen later on in the off-season.

And best of all they didn't give up anything really. It would have been nice to wait on Krol, but we all know he does well an AAA and then hurts the team when you think he's figured it out. Speier is a nice guy to have around but upside isn't huge and he's still a long ways away.

Well, its only November 20th, so hopefully Avila can still address LF and CF.

I believe it's 5.5. Contract is 8, Braves cover 2.5.

Rajai and Maybin are pretty similar hitters over their career. .269/.316/.387 vs. .251/.313/.366. Rajai had a spike in power last season, while Maybin seems able to draw a few more walks.

I think it comes down to defense, and aside from last year, Maybin's been the far better defender.

I'd rather have Maybin at 1/$6.5M + team option than Rajai at 2/$12M, just because of age potential and defense. The guys we gave up don't change that equation for me.

They still need another right handed hitting OF. Maybin the perfect 4th outfielder for this team.

Collins is just not a fit for this team and should start the year in Toledo.

I would like to see them still go after aoki or young on a modest deal. Aoki to be a full timer and bump Maybin to part time duty. Young to be able backup CF and share time in left with cam.

Maybin really seems like a younger version of Rajai on team friendly contract and probably better defense.

One other factor to consider is that his contract is actually very friendly from a luxury tax standpoint, which is what really matters.

When he signed his extension it was 5 years at 25 million. So that means he counts against the tax 5 million per year throughout the deal. We are getting 2.5 million, so it really only costs us 2.5 against the cap this year.

The 2017 option will count fully.

I'll be curious to see how he field's this season. Not clear to me what pulled down his DRS last season. Good OFs usually don't become bad OFs at 29 unless something else is going on.

Small sample objectively difficult to categorize defensive stats happen.

Maybin will only cost 5.5 and he's a solid player, similar to Rajai. But Rajai is the better hitter. Davis also hits LHP much better than Maybin, which is where we currently need the most help.

Against RHP, Maybin is better than Rajai 691 for Cam v 654 for Rajai. Neither is particularly inspiring.

On the plus side, Cameron is much younger and maybe he can find more success in a limited role.

At the very least, the Tigers will need to find a cheap corner OF that can hit LHP. With the Maybin return and the rumored interest in Fister, we may as well just bring back Raburn.

I think they've done so well addressing closer and 3rd/4th OF without spending too much short or long term. Obviously they're not marquee acquisitions, but with 5-7 holes to fill they couldn't do that anyways. This is a solid start to the off-season.
