Kelly was too tall and lanky to be gritty.

yeah, he wasn't really gritty. He was a good teammate.

Yankees fans generally seem to be upset about the idea of Wilson being traded, so that seems like a good thing for us.

Tigers get Tommy Field on a minor league deal. He's too clean cut to be gritty, but I bet he plays the game the right way.

His hat is too big. He's a punk. I bet he likes Justin Bieber.

It's December 9 and it feels like Al has rebuilt half the team already.

I wonder if all these moves by Avila is going to inspire Illitch to pony up for a left fielder.

Provided a 6 man bullpen, it seems like it will shake out as the righties being Rodriguez, Lowe, Alex Wilson, and probably Verhagen. Lefties will be Hardy and Justin Wilson. You can have a KC type 7-8-9 with Lowe, Justin Wilson, and Rodriguez. Alex Wilson will be the 6th inning spot reliever type with Hardy the LOOGY and Verhagen the long man. The bullpen could actually be a strength. Still have guys like Rondon for injury or ineffectiveness.

Since they are saving cash with this move, does that mean they can spend more on LF now?

Austin Jackson is no longer even a "tier 2" OF, in my opinion. Last 2 years his OPS was .655 & .696 - OBP around .310

Ugg.

Maybin may surprise a little, as his K rate has been improving. Hoping he can reach @ at least a .330 clip.

He has historically been a slow starter, so maybe limit his PA's before June?

Nobody runs with a six man pen anymore.

Pretty amazing that Verlander and Sanchez will be the only hold-overs from the '15 opening day pitching staff (+ that 2% chance for Greene ) I think someone remarked a while ago that you can't rebuild a whole pitching staff in one off-season. I guess that may be true but the Tigers have come pretty close to doing it in 8 months.

Nice for the fans in Toledo too, they get their pitching staff back to start the season.:silly:

Wouldn't it be nice if Al and Mike had an agreement that if Al were to somehow keep all top prospects and rebuild the pitching staff for around 10 million that he'll be able to go get a LFer. He's done a lot for little money. Reward him, Mike!

Seeing that they just signed a util infielder, maybe Machado is going?

I hope Fields isn't seen as anything more than system filler. He looks pretty terrible on both sides of the ball.

The Tigers had 7 relievers on their opening day roster last year.

7 is more than 6.

Seeing as he was signed to a minor league deal, it seems fairly likely he was signed to take the Josh Wilson role and fill a spot while jacoby serves his suspension.

Last year, we started the year with our top relievers AA, Nathan (in role only), Joba, and Soria with the hope that Rondon could have a breakout this year. We are going to be so much better setup this spring for the season. But even looking at last years opening day bullpen, there was no way to predict that AA would implode so bad and pretty much every reliever besides Soria would underperform already low expectations. I would try to add one more reliever yet this winter to fortify that bullpen. There seem to be plenty of them still available in one way or another.

Edit: gotta make the bullpen idiot proof from Ausmus.

I don't think it's gonna happen but even if the Tigers signed one of the 2nd tier outfielders(Fowler, Span), I would consider this a near perfect off season. As it stands it's still damn good and about the best we could realistically hope for.

Eight teams visit with Joe Nathan in nashville, including 3 former teams, tigers, rangers and giants.

At this point you can start looking at the scrap heap but don't need to go dumpster diving for Joe Nathan. I like Fernando Rodney at this point.

I'm kind of pissed Avila didn't offer Holoday as well to get Betances. Cashman obviously wasn't thinking clearly. Could have gotten Gardner too.

Why is Nathan not retiring? He is 41 years old and coming off of two awful seasons.

Busy, busy week for Tigers and first-year GM Al Avila. Bulk of the work is done, team encouraged by additions. Club still mulling the possibility of adding another reliever though it sounds as if landing a utility player is a bigger priority at the moment

The Tigers trade for a dead Cajun chef and people are pleased?

I thought we were getting the dead race car driver.
