And I love to hate on Dusty as much as anyone but this is nothing more than the media needing something to write about. He said nothing wrong. OK the pants comment was dumb.

I did like this quote by Dusty Baker.

Susan Slusser

‏@susanslusser

Asked if he'd considered Barry Bonds for his hitting coach, Dusty Baker says, to laughter, "I had him for 10 years ...that's enough."'

A bench of Pearce, Maybin, salty, and Romine would be pretty good.

I don't think Pearce is enough of a UTIL guy, for what AA seems to be looking for. He can play OF and 1B but has never played 3B, which is what I think they'll be looking for first and foremost with their UTIL option. If signed, he would more likely be a replacement for Collins, which would be fine by me, but I don't see them going that route.

If it were me, I'd look to the trade/waiver market for a guy like Rua as the UTIL guy. Not him necessarily but someone at the end of someone's 25/40 man that will have no salary and can move around. I think something like that could pop up as people fill rosters and have to cut guys. Sean Rodriguez would be a possible last resort option for really cheap, although I know nothing about how he's aging.

And then my other OF signing would be Brown, Snider, Grossman, or someone like that, a LHB to compete with Collins for 4th OF in ST.

Ilitch did say something that he thought everything was a mess in the entire org during the Zmnn press conference, so this may be a reaction to that.

I can see where there would not be much continuity when most of the good prospects are used as trade chips. It seems like Avila is trying to change that.

Romine can easily cover 3b.

I'm only advocating for Pearce if they get him on a Rajai type contract or something similar to what an OF only guy will get. The ability to play 1B and 2B is a nice bonus.

They don't need a second utility infielder that can cover all four positions when they already have Romine for that role.

Pearce would be a bargain at 2/12 or something similar. I'd prefer him over aoki.

I don't disagree with your opinion. But they've been pretty clear that they want this RHH OF to also play the infield, so I don't think Pearce is that guy.

I think they want a 2nd UTIL so they can substitute for Nick late (either defensively or on the bases) and not be short-handed. Or perhaps they want actual 3B insurance in case he regresses instead of progresses, which the Lawrie interest would indicate, if that was true.

I'd personally rather have 5 OFs too, if Collins is on the roster, but I get the thinking.

Zobrist to the Cubs for 4/$56M. I think that's a good deal. I suspect teams were wary of his age and paying for defense, but Maddon I'm sure will love it.

I thought he might get more than that the way the media has been hyping him but I am starting to think the market for bats is not as high as people as expect. Gammons just said on MLB that not as many teams are in on as Cespedes as people think.

Seems like a good fit from both sides.

Ok, who was it here that was convinced that Zobrist was going to get $20M per?

I think OFs start coming off of the board now. Would love to have Gordon. But I also kind of want to see him stay in KC. Nebraska kid stays with the Royals for his whole career is kind of cool.

Ha, could've been me, I don't remember. Was it you? 2/$40M would've made sense to me tho.

Cubs dealing Starlin Castro to NYY to make room.

Agree with this except for Pearce > Aoki. I think that's a stretch. Especially if contract terms are basically the same.

As for Pearce, there was a crawl about him and the Rangers on MLBN. Bannister was bench coach in Pittsburgh when Pearce played there. Maybe it's coincidence and there really isn't anything to it. I can't think of Texas' OF situation.

It might've been you. I thought $15 per max. So when I saw 4/$80M this morning, I was awfully shocked.

I never thought about the Cubs. But I think given Zobrist's past with Maddon and how Zobrist's career was made in Tampa, it just seems to make perfect sense. Especially now in the NL.

Zobrist's contract and situation is so much better than VMartinez'. It's really a damn shame that the Tigers gave in last season.

Thought the same thing.

Cubs also deal Castro to Yankees for Adam Warren and Brendan Ryan.

Rosenthal reporting the Dbacks have a deal for Shelby Miller.

Interesting trade. Cheapish, high floor performer in Warren for an expensive guy who could be terrible or who could be really good. Warren is interesting, okay as a starter but very good from the bullpen.

This may be a problem with Castro going to New York. When the fans do their thing where they call out each player, Castro will stop paying attention to the game.

Seems like the Braves got a good haul for Miller.

Inciarte, Dansby Swanson and Aaron Blair... Incredible deal for the Braves. The type of package you don't really ever see anymore. For 3 years of Shelby Miller, a good but not great starter. Steamer only has him projected for 1.7 WAR next year.

Gabe Speier also goes to AZ in the Miller deal. He must've been the key to the whole thing.

Not sure why the Cubs wanted Brendan Ryan in that deal.

back up IF/someone to flip...the return probably wasn't gonna be that great since Cubs ate no money
