I wouldn't mind picking up Joba again. Maybe he's been working on his stamina and we could get a whole season out of him like he had in the first half.

same. You could look at his inning totals the last 3-4 years and know he wasn't going to be great past 40 innings. Not sure what they were expecting. He was great the first half of the season. Bring him back.

kindergarten and 1st grade, where there's literally nap time and recess time.

This may have been the case when you went through school, but it wasn't for me, and it certainly, certainly isn't anymore in the post-No Child Left Behind / Race to the Top world.

I was talking with my dad last night, and he made the same point. He talked me into it.

I couldn't have survived without recess. That's a scary thought to me.

Although now I suppose the kids have cell phones and ipods to keep the mind active. I guess that's a fair trade.

There isn't room on the 40 man roster right now. And I'm not sure about other teams' needs, but I would imagine there are still bullpen openings around the league. I would imagine most on the list above are not going to settle for a minor league deal with an invite to spring training just yet. The flip side to that is that at this point of the offseason, these guys should be available on a cheap base salary for a season or two.

Correct. They could designate a guy like Chad Smith or Valdez from the 40-man. But with a pitching staff of 12, you already have your 5 starters and AlAl, Nathan, Soria, Wilson, Gorzo, Hardy, Rondon filling things up. And Hanrahan, Valdez, Nesbitt, Smith, Zeid, Farmer, Lobstein, Ryan, Krol, VerHagen also competing.

I've no problem dumping a guy like Smith, but they have so many lotto tickets right now, I'm not sure it's worth buying another.

It was K-8 for me when I was a kid. I don't know about now. My first year of high school we could sign out of home room and go to the gym, but that changed the following year.

I only got recess in elementary school (K - 5) 30 years ago. We could go outside during lunch in middle school (6-8). Had to go to the cafeteria for lunch in high school, unless you were a senior, in which case you could go off campus for lunch.

We were not allowed to sign out of class to go to gym either.

We had recess and lunch and then a lunch recess. And if you had a bus that dropped you off early or picked you up late you could play a lot of basketball too. I was almost happy when I was playing football/basketball/soccer. High school campus was very much closed for us.

I didn't know what I was missing until a grad school friend told me about his high school, in that if the teacher knew you got the material you didn't have to even be in class always. You could hang out in a general area with sofas and such or library/computer lab/etc.

Keith Law spends too much time trying to sound smart on the internet.

At least he gets paid for it which is more than you can say for us.

Does anyone here actually think the Tigers are not the worst farm system in baseball at the moment?

Derek Hill is a good prospect, but after that it's just a bunch of filler. That's not to say that some of the guys we have aren't going to come up eventually and contribute. It's just that every other system can say at least the same thing about a lot more guys.

To be clear, I don't really think this is a problem. One of way of building a team is hoarding prospects and then filling the roster with the ones that pan out. We don't operate that way. We convert the question mark pieces into proven players instead. That's fine, too.

When the wheels eventually come off this train, I think you might see a transition toward building up a system again.

But we've got the following spots occupied for the next few years

Dh

1b

2b

SS

3b

Rf

Catcher and cf are likely spoken for as well.

So we basically need to fill left field at some point soon. We can afford to wait and see if any other spots need addressing.

I dont feel qualified to say because to do so you would have to have in depth knowledge of 29 other systems. Sure I could check out lists and compare but thats only as accurate as the lists. Its all guesswork. I don't see it as an issue. Our system has been ranked as poor for like a decade and outside of kinsler and martinez and nathan our team is a product of a poor farm system.

Mine was K-8 as well. After lunch we got 30 minutes or so to go outside and play. No one ever turned it down. I am not even sure if you could back then. You ate lunch and got some time to run it all off outside. I loved it. The best were big snow days where all the snow was pushed to the corners of the parking lot we called a play ground. We would climb up and slide down. Many games of touch football were played out there.

You mean the farm team? The big league club has had about as good a 9 year run as any other great 9 year span.

I was hoping they would be ranked in the 26-27 range, so yeah, I'm fairly crushed.

In his blurb on each time, Law also mentioned that Jake Thompson will be a top 100 guy for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see Adames on a few lists as well.

I also kind of hoped that Moya would be on the fringes of the top 100, but he's probably going to have to repeat his AA season at AAA before that happens.

No.... I mean our perennially bad farm system developed or helped obtain Cabrera, Iglesias, Castellanos, JD Martinez, Gose, Cespedes, Avila, Verlander, Sanchez, Price, Shane Green, Alfredo Simon, AlAl, Soria....

I'm not saying that if you tried an objective analysis that it the system wouldn't rank last or near last. I just don't see it as that big of an issue. It's always been bad. In fact I bet the last time they were in the upper 25% would be for a group that never amounted to much, like maybe the late 90s after RandY Smith had a few years to draft. Probably looked very good on paper.

Yeah I read that all wrong my bad. I thought you were inferring our team with its faults is because of the bad farm. Gordon Beckham just signed a 1 year deal with the White Sox and Viciedo was just released BTW.
