Wilson is the new gritty white guy.

I was worried about grit. I'm glad that it is being addressed. He's got a nifty .226/.278/.316 career line so you know that he's going to come up with some timely hits. But he's more about leadership and dugout chatter. From his photo on baseball-reference you can tell that he doesn't have any bottom teeth, but he hasn't let that discourage him.

His face does ooze grittiness. Romine does have any of that.

Are grit and moxie interchangeable terms?

I'm not sure about that. I think that you might be able to have grit without moxie. You have to be white to have either of course, but to me moxie would be more demonstrative - "fiery" as it were, whereas grit could manifest itself in a sort of quiet determination. I'm also not sure how a non-Anglo surname would influence the outcome, e.g. Dykstra or Podsednik or that midget second baseman for the Red Sox - is there a predisposition to moxie based upon the Caucasian subgroup of one's ancestry? I think that the studies so far are inconclusive.

Did Jim Abbott have grit or moxie? Would you consider it more so if he were Jimmy Abbottonio or Abbottinksi or even better, Jaques A'bott

Abbott might have had grit, but I don't think that pitchers as a rule can be gritty. They can be crafty if they are righthanded, or wily if they are lefthanded, but they don't do enough fielding or baserunning to be gritty.

I would only add left handed pitchers can also be crafty. Frank Tanana was crafty.

Sidebar: Pitchers can also be grizzled, whereas positional players cannot. But that is different attribute altogether.

I think a fancier word covers Abbott: resolute

Yeah only lefties can be crafty. The "mexicans" have their own terms but great care has to me made. Its often suble. A casual "hot" or "fiery" can be thrown out but dont do it too much.

1890 - 1920 these same terms applied to the Irish. Progress!

Tanana was a wily portsider. Sort of the mirror image of crafty, but not crafty...wily. Righthanders can't be wily, and lefthanders can't be crafty. Sorry, I have to dig in on this one. It's the hill that I've chosen to die on.

What Brian Kenney was to Wins Charles Liston is to Crafty/Wily. Godspeed my friend.

Do a google search for "crafty left hander."

I think I know what Charles is getting at. Right handers used to be crafty and left handers used to spacey. Left handers only became crafty after the game got LaRussarized. At that point, any lefty with a pulse could keep his job. Since so many modern lefties have no real stuff, they are called crafty.
