2014 Draft

they have to find the money to sign the draft class somewhere!

Houston might not be able to play anymore physically. Why keep him around?

At this point id be surprised if he's NOT cut before the season starts.

You misunderstand, we save nothing by cutting Chris Houston. In fact, cutting him would lower our salary cap by $400k.

He's not going anywhere.

Here goes nothing. This draft is the most unique draft I can remember. I usually have a decent grasp on what is going to happen, but not this year.

1. Houston- J.Clowney, DE

2. Rams- J.Matthews, OT

3. Jax- S.Watkins, WR

4. Cle- G.Robinson, OT

5. Oakland- T.Lewan, OT

6. Atl- K.Mack, OLB

7. TB- M.Evans, WR

8. Minn- B.Bortles, QB

9. Buff- E.Ebron, TE

10. Lions- Trade with Dallas for 1st, 3rd, and 5th round picks. Dallas selects Johnny Manziel

11. Tenn- Z.Martin, OT

12. NYGiants- O.Beckham, WR

13. Rams- A.Donald, DT

14. Bears- D.Dennard, CB

15. Steelers- K.Fuller, CB

16. Lions- J.Gilbert, CB

17. Balt- A.Barr, OLB

18. Jets- B.Cooks, WR

19. Miami- M.Moses, OT

20. Cards- D.Carr, QB

21. GB- C.Pryor, S

22. Phi- C.Latimer, WR

23. KC- J.Verrett, CB

24. Bengals- T.Bridgewater, QB

25. SD- B.Ellington, WR

26. Cle- T.Savage, QB

27. NO- C.J.Mosely, LB

28. Car- M.Lee, WR

29. NE- Clinton-Dix, S

30. SF- B.Roby, CB

31. Den- D.Adams, WR

32. Sea- J.Matthews, WR

Lions picks:

45- Marcus Martin, C

76- Allen Robinson, WR

78- Dri Archer, RB/WR/QB/Returner/Speed/Laundry/////

111- C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE

133- Logan Thomas, QB

136- Larry Webster, DE/OLB

158- Craig Loston, S

189- Chris Boswell, K

227- Benji Fowler, WR

This draft would get me excited for next season. Absolutely ideal. I don't love the Dri Archer pick and would prefer someone like Christian Jones who would be decent value and fill a need but otherwise love it.

If the Lions stay at 10 in this scenario, I think they would take Kyle Fuller, or Zach Martin, who would eventually take over for Raiola.

I was thinking today that logically, Fuller has as good of a chance of going there as Dennard or Gilbert. They all grade out about the same. Its more of a preference issue. Mayock mentioned Martin as a possibility for us the other day. I could see that at 10 myself. I don't think the value is there.

I don't think that's true. Depends on when they cut him.

Mayhew had an interesting presser today. Nothing earth shattering and a lot of vagueness, but it was a solid listen.

He mentioned the #1 trait he likes in a CB is competitiveness, not wanting guys to catch a ball on you ever, even in practice. That made me think of Dennard

Mentioned that Houston's injury is becoming more of a worry since he still hasn't healed right. Didn't rule out surgery.

Basically said(not that this is a surprise) that they are comfortable with their board and know who they will take in any given situation.

I hope that he doesn't feel the need to take corner based mostly on Houston's injury status. If Gilbert, Dennard or even Fuller are #1 on their board when they are ready to pick at 10 and feel that he will be the best player and fit long term then fine but i sure hope he doesn't take them because they need a corner to fill in next season if Houston is out for an extended period of time.

The more i think about it, the more i think that a trade down is the only smart move to make. Unless one of the top 6 (there appears to be a pretty clear top 6 - Clowney, Mack, Watkins, Robinson, Evans, Matthews) drops to the Lions then I feel like the next 10 or so are pretty tightly clustered so they can probably get one of the guys on their board in the lower teens and accumulate even more picks especially with a polarizing player like Manziel still dangling out there who some teams might have rated very highly (Hello Dallas).

The top prospect on the list was Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan, who is projected as a mid first-round selection. Another big name was Louisiana State quarterback Zach Mettenberger. ProFootballTalk.com first reported that Mettenberger tested positive for having a diluted urine sample, which would count as a failed test under the NFL's drug program.

Among the other notable players who were listed to NFL teams as having failed Combine drug tests in February were LSU defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, University of Miami tackle Seantrel Henderson, and Florida State linebackers Telvin Smith and Christian Jones.

Seems like more and more you hear Dennard linked to the Lions as we near the draft. Doesn't really mean anything...just interesting I guess.

Aaron Donald is becoming more and more intriguing to me because of the uncertainty at DT after next year. He may not help the team most next season but it seems like he would set us up better for the future. If we are not going to make Suh the highest paid DT in the game, he would be a good pick.

I could definitely see Donald. Mayhew isn't one to pass if a dominant line prospect fall to him. I don't see them having Ha Ha as their best available player. Its pretty tough to say though as there is a complete change in tier right when we are picking. I really hope we either move down or have a top 6 non slip to us. Come on 3 QBs in front of us!

I'm only buying in to the Clinton-Dix name because I've seen multiple reports now of him being a "perfect fit" at Delmas' old spot for what Teryl Austin likes to run. That's why I could see it happening.

As for Donald, I could also see that because I doubt the Lions will keep both Suh and Fairley following the year. I'm assuming they keep one, which means they'll need someone, and Donald is probably a better DT prospect than they'd find in next year's draft at this point.

Donald can't play when the Lions have two DT's already in Fairley and Suh. He might go #8 overall to Minny, so that's a moot point. He's a very good player, but the Lions can only play 2 at a time, so it makes no sense right now. Ha Ha isn't really ready yet, he needs time to develop. He should have stayed in school for his senior year imo.

There is less and less emphasis league-wide on corners and more on safeties. I don't think a corner is going in the top 10. If Barr, Mack, Evans, Watkins or Dix are not there at 10 - they should do everything they can to trade down and get another 2nd rounder. Depth is as important as anything for this team.

I'm hoping the Lions go corner and am sort with Sonics on the thought of trading down depending on who's there. Assuming Watkins, Evans and Mack are gone and Dennard, Gilbert and Fuller are there I'd try to drop 3-6 spots and hope one of those 3 make it through to me.

Fairley only plays 65% of the team's snaps on defense and Suh plays 85%. And there are a lot of players who don't play the majority of snaps at their position during their rookie years...and again, both of them are not going to be back in 2015-16. Both of them might not even make it to 2014-15.

The only thing about that though, is that they've talked extensively how they want Quin in that role and see him as a perfect fit there.

Ideally we would trade Fairley if we drafted Donald, but not sure if there is any value to be had for him out there. Dallas was rumored to be interested at some point.

If we didn't trade Fairley, I think Donald would play a decent amount of DE. He's a tremendous athlete and I think he could do some damage there.

Or even possibly more ideally we trade Suh and get a solid return (first round+). But that is definitely a point of contention.
