Fair enough.........You are correct. Good fielders should not have to dive for a ball. But I will say that great fielders do dive for them.

There are probably a few balls he could dive for during the course of the season, but it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. He also might get hurt diving for a ball.

I'd rather have him get good jumps and get to balls, then start late and dive for balls risking injury injury in the process. Whitaker and Trammell never dove for balls either. If a fielder makes more plays than an average player at his position, that's good enough for me regardless of how he does it. A great fielder should not have to dive for many balls.

My take is that there are at least two reasons Ajax doesn't dive despite being a great fielder. One is that AJax goes back extremely well, as a result he plays shallow. So he ends up going back more than he comes in - there is never any virtue in diving for a ball you are going back on - you are reaching up. The second is that he has complete command of the ability to basket catch, thus there is never any virtue in diving for a ball directly in front of him - your reach is better on your feet if you can basket catch - it is the same as running through 1b instead of sliding there. The only time diving could improve AJax's play would be on balls going to his side but in not out. The problem with that is that the alleys at COPA are over 400' if he dives trying to cut off a ball to his side and misses, so he usually takes a route back and out and takes it on a hop to keep it to a single. I have absolutely no complaints about his lack of diving.

My only complaint about AJax is that he did not seem to be moving well last season and either got to several balls that he could not then put away or ended up a step short of where it looked like he should have make the play - IOW playing 'old man' sytle OF. I'm hoping that was all because of his hamstring issues, which once in play, seldom resolve completely until a season is over.

So you're saying chicks like it when guys get dirty?

Well yes of course. They like to be ignored, unless they are being shouted at. They like a filthy, sweaty guy who hasn't shaved in a while and has a foul mouth. They especially like lending money to a guy who isn't working. That's what I love about this forum, you can come in here to talk about baseball and end up getting some really useful advice about life in general.

Someone said Dom Brown and if he's really available that would be something that I'd like to see. It's easy to look at Brown and think Delmon Young mark II but I personally like the guy and think he'd be fun to watch. Of course I was a giant stan for Delmon Young when he was a prospect and when he first broke into the show so don't take my word for it. He's a lefty though which would sort of screw up a Dirks platoon.

Ben Nicholson-Smith is saying Davis is about to sign, and it looks like the Tigers are gonna be the team

This ****ing sucks. Our offense is going to be so crap next year. Virtually everyone in the lineup is due to either stay the same as last year or get worse except for Avila, and guys like Hunter/Kinsler have potential to completely fall off a cliff and be replacement level with the bat.

I like it. He is a good part time player. Most importantly, he OPS's 857 against LHP last year (779 over his career), which is all we'd need him to do. Also good speed off the bench. 46/51 in SB attempts last year.

Tigers are in discussions with free agent Rajai Davis, source says. @bnicholsonsmith reported that Tigers are frontrunner.

I wonder if this is a counter-rumor to the rumor that Choo is about to sign with Texas. IE, Boras trying to call DD's bluff, when DD floats a bluff of his own.

I really have to believe the Tigers want Choo. No way does Illich get cheap now.

They'd shield him so he played predominantly against lefties. He's a career .779 OPS against lefties so he's fine as a platoon guy, plus he is one of the best baserunners in baseball. I assumed he'd cost a bit too much and they'd go an even cheaper route like they did with Tui last year. But, if there isn't money for Choo and they are going to get a RH OF who is willing to come in and be a platoon guy, then he'd be one near the top of the list.

He also just turned 33. His speed will probably fall off any year now and he plays defense like Delmon Young.

Dirks/Davis

Castellanos

Iglesias

You can be pretty sure you're going to get very little to no offense from those guys unless Castellanos somehow beasts on the league as a guy that just turned 22.

Then you have Kinsler, who has been horrendous away from Texas in his career, Hunter who just turned 39, and Martinez who is entering his age 36 (I think) season. There's also Avila, who I think will be great, but the fact that he struck out over 30% of the time last year and was dreadful in the first half last year can't be ignored.

If everyone performs like they're capable of, they should be fine, but this offense has such huge potential to be total crap next year.

No doubt Castellanos' performance will be huge. It is the swing between a good line up and one with too big a 'black hole factor'.

BTW - Victor's 35th birthday is in 13 days.

I wonder if Davis is Ajax' replacement.

Rajai Davis is perfect for this team, given their commitment to dirks in left and not unlimited budget.

Davis has been an everyday starter in the recent past, so he's the type of bench player sabretooth is always clamoring for.

Plus, he provides a speed element that this team has been lacking. It will be great to be able to put him in late in a game to steal a base.

Davis is not Berry. Davis had a 800+ OPS against left handed pitching. He had more stolen bases than the Tigers team combined. He is a great platoon option. He can be utilized for his speed when he is not starting. I guess people just look at the name instead of the fit. Dirks and Davis provided about a 2.5 WAR last year. Is it really worth it to spend millions to get an extra win from Choo? I'm surprised Dombrowski made this move. Usually he doesn't get role players that can help the team.
