Red Wings Offseason

There's a story going around that Semin has a huge offer on the table to play in Russia and is waiting to see if any NHL teams will offer something comparable. All of this talk about him being a locker room cancer is most likely about 99% untrue.

Considering there won't be an NHL season he should take the Russian offer.

Those rumors of the huge contract in the KHL were shot down less than a day after reports first broke. Someone claimed he was set to get a three-year deal at $10 million per season, which was false. CSKA Moscow offered him a two-year deal making almost exactly what he's making in Washington.

Also, look at the last line of the article I post. The same thing is in almost every article or write-up I've read about Semin. Doesn't look like he's too fond heading to Russia to play in the KHL....

I have no idea whether Semin is a coach-killer or lockerroom cancer or has a poor attitude or whatever. I'd say somewhere less than 99% fake, but not confirmed either. Let's say 50/50. But keep in mind that Semin is well-known for those stupid shots he took at Crosby in an interview when Semin was starting out. I wouldn`t be surprised if some in the Canadian media still hold a grudge or formed an impression dating back to that.

Puck Daddy chats with Alex Semin about Ovie, Crosby, stardom - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! Sports

What's so special about [Crosby]? I don't see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there's nothing else. Even if you compare him to Patrick Kane from Chicago ... [Kane] is a much more interesting player. The way he moves, his deking abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the play is so superb.

I think that if you take any player, even if he is "dead wood," and start promoting him, you'll get a star. Especially if he scores 100 points. No one is going to care about anyone else. No one is going to care whether he possesses great skill. Let's say you put someone in front of the net and let him deflect pucks in, and he scored 50 goals; everyone will say "Wow!" and then hand him a $10 million per year contract. That's what they like here.

And in Russia people like beautiful hockey, and not dump and chase. I just don't get it, why when a player is skating up the ice and no one is attacking him, he dumps the puck into the offensive zone and then chases it? Why would you do this if there is no one forechecking you? I understand that if there is someone coming at you and you don't know whether you can get past that player, then you can dump the puck, pass it or shoot. But if not, then hold on to the puck, skate forward, create a chance.

Why would you want to dump the puck and then chase after it and crash into the boards? I don't know. But that's just my opinion.

They should hire Semin to be the coach. Who needs Babcock when Semin has it all figured out?

Abdelkader is close to signing a deal with the Wings according to internet rumors.

Umm, so apparently Shea Weber just signed a 14-year, 100 million dollar offer sheet with the Flyers? Uhhhhhhhhhhh....

Weber obviously doesn't want to be in Nashville.... I guess they'll take the 4 1st round picks and sign players to ridiculous contracts to get to the cap floor?

The Wings need to be targeting Keith Yandle. With the mess going on in Phoenix, they might be looking to dump payroll.

He's worth that. A 7.1 cap number is completely reasonable.

I totally agree. My "umm" and "uhhh" were more about how that's a better deal than anyone was trying to sign Suter for, and I think everyone would agree Weber is better than Suter.

I wish we would have made that move....I think NVille matches it any way....but 7.1 million for a legit #1 is very reasonable and wouldn't have been viewed as upsetting our existing salary structure. I think it would have been a gamble worth taking.

According to Darren Dreger, the extremely reliable source who broke the news, "Philly, NYR, Detroit and San Jose were big players in Weber trade scenarios."

Most of the reports I've read have said 14 years, $110 million which would be a still very reasonable 7.8 million cap hit for one of the top three defensemen in the league. It's extremely front-loaded though and would allow Weber to make something like $14 million per year in the first four years of the deal. I'm no expert on the NHL CBA, but the way it's front loaded is supposedly why it would make it difficult for Nashville to match. I'm hoping the Wings can make a trade for someone like Braydon Coburn, Kimmo Timonen, or even one of their forwards (Hartnell?) if Weber ends up with the Flyers.

Right, the front-loaded might make it tough for Nashville to match. But I bet they do.

I don't tknow that the fact that Nashville was shopping him proves that they don't want Weber or Weber doesn't want to be in Nashville. Nashville was scared of losing him like they did Suter, and Weber was insisting on market value. Philly just did the negotiating for them, in effect.

Man, too bad the Wings couldn't offer to match; I know that's not how it works. But if Kenny was in trade talks he might have been considering an offer sheet as a fallback but Philly beat him to it.

Agreed, but all the picks?

And you'd have to believe that the situation is different if this is Detroit signing Weber, I'm sure the Predators would be much more willing to match an offer if made by their biggest rival in the division. If that were the case and the Predators did match, then Holland effectively locked up Weber for his division rival for 12 years at a reasonable cap hit with nothing in return but the knowledge that Weber will be playing against you for a long long time...

So in CBA negotiations is Ed Snider still with a straight face going to try to say that the owners are impoverished?

Very good point. But I hope Holland didn't refrain from an offer sheet because he felt it wasn't gentlemanly to go after an RFA that way. With Columbus obviously not wanting to play ball with the Wings and with the Wild having no qualms about playing the family-package angle, the Wings would have nothing to lose by playing hardball.

I woke up in a cold sweat this morning. Having dreamt that Holland called a press announce for Monday to announce that the "team is all set" with the big moves being signing Hudler at $4.75mm ("one of the most sought after free agents"), bringing back Quincey ("having him for a full season will be like adding a new player") and inking Selanne and Jagr to one-year deals ("thrilled with the addition of two all-time greats"). OK, it was actually only a daydream, a bad one, but ...

Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?
