The next statue needs to be Lou & Tram, a combo statue of the duo starting the front end of a double play at second base. No current Tiger deserves recognition. Verlander & Cabrera are the closest bets, but are certainly no sure shots right now or in a few years.

I do have a recommendation to enhance Kaline's statue during ballgames. We've seen the tigers on the score board have thier eyes lit up green for Tiger runs scored and heard the growl in the background. Well, perhaps for errors, Kaline's head could nod downward in frustration with a nice "aw, ****!" over the PA?

Promising. In addition, you could turn Cobb loose on any streakers, sort of like the Terminator?

Mere longevity (ala Inge) does not earn a statue. Otherwise you would have to have statues for Billy Rogell, Hooks Dauss, Norm Cash, Tommy Brookens, Mickey Stanley, Donie Bush, Bobby Veach, Tommy Bridges, Bobby Higginson, George Mullin, Rudy York, Aurelio Rodriguez, etc. Place starts looking a bit forested.

Only handicapped ones....

As for statues, I'd say Cabrera has the best shot of current Tigers by a long shot, unless player of the game wins are taken into account, but Tram and Lou should get statues first, then I'd have to go with Heilmann, all before any current Tiger gets one.

Horton's community contributions, solid hitting stats for his era, and of course being on a WS winner, those all are factors. Horton is certainly a legend to many in Detroit, even if his playing stats are far from such. Legends are in the eye of the beholder, and I beheld two legends in our middle infield for all those years.

My 'other' vote is akin to HueyTaxi's. There is no current player who matches the magnitude of those presently honored. Cabrera may rise to this level in time. I like the Tram/Whitaker idea some of you are pitching. There should be something special in Comerica to remember them -- beyond what you see in the 1980's decade display on the concourse.

I realize Horton did a lot in the community, but I don't think he can be considered a baseball legend like Cobb or Greenberg. Some might consider Inge a legend too. I don't think Horton is any more of a legend to most fans than Whitaker and Trammell.

screw the players, put a statue of Titus Tiger out there...Z

Actually I would like to see one of a fan.. that would be a nice tribute, instead of saying Detroit has the best fans, reward them

Whitaker and Trammell are so far ahead of any current Tiger in terms of deserving a statue, that it's hard to vote in this poll. Ask me again in ten years.

So true. Veteran's committee hopefully puts them in the Hall as well. I think Tramm will make it, but they should go in together.

Personally for the Tigers to give anyone a statue they need to be at least borderline Hall of famers, and most likely need to be in the HOF. Being a fan favorite also helps a lot. Like I could see Whittaker and Trammell getting a statue, they are close enough to the HOF standard and were loved by the fans.

With that I also suggest George Kell. He went into The HOF a Tiger and that is good enough for me. He was also a beloved broadcaster for nearly 30 years.

I have always wondered if Kaline really didn't like him, as surely Al's influence could get it done.

Sam Crawford and Harry Heilmann need statues first and foremost. Both Hall of Famers who played the vast majority of their careers with the Tigers. In addition to Heilmann's HOF Tiger playing career, he also was their radio play-by-play man for nearly 20 years. As time goes on, less people even know who guys like that were, and statues would be a nice way to spur awareness for new generations.

Sparky Anderson could be argued because he's in the HOF, managed the '84 WS champs and managed a long time in Detroit. But a lot of people will think of him as a Red first, which he's also pictured as on his HOF plaque. Other HOFers such as George Kell and Jim Bunning had nice careers as Tigers, but also played a lot for other teams, as well.

As far as the most likely of the current players, it has to be Cabrera first and Verlander second, but they have a long way to go even to reach the statures of say, Whitaker, Trammell, Morris, Lolich, etc. Not HOFers, but all Tiger legends.

My criteria would be HOF and the majority of the career as a Tiger (with Horton as a worthy exception). The Tigers are pretty conservative with ultimate honor stuff like retiring numbers and building statues and I think that's a pretty good policy. Crawford and Heilmann are really overdue, though.

Kell did play the most years with Detroit in his journeyman career (how many hall of famers do you think played for 5 teams?), but it is the years he spent broadcasting that should, combined with his playing, get him a statue.

Lolich is perhaps the most under appreciated Tiger of all time. Look at his strikeouts and IP sometime...

Lee, instead of Willie Horton would you have a statue of an usher telling a black kid he couldn't sit in those seats.

I kid, but only to emphasize that the Horton legend of helping quell the rioters in his uniform is an important cultural totem for the city.

I don't understand what the deal with Crawford is.

Not sure what you mean by "the deal". What I don't understand is why it took so long for him to get elected to the HOF.

94 years of MLB have been played since Crawford retired and he still ranks in the top 100 all time in nearly every offensive category, including 1st in triples, 29th in hits and 53rd in total bases. An exception is home runs, but he was regarded as one of the top power hitters of the dead ball era.

Ty Cobb pushed for years to get Crawford into the HOF, which I think is meaningful since they reportedly had a bitter rivalry as players. Quotes from his contemporaries leave no doubt that Crawford was one of the very best players of his era. He's not on par with someone the level of Cobb, but his case is stronger than guys like Trammell and Whitaker, IMO.

Kell actually played slightly less than half his years and games with the Tigers, but his most productive time was in Detroit. The fact he went into the HOF as a Tiger is a great point, plus his long Tiger broadcasting career win me over for a statue. Agreed on Lolich being under appreciated - I don't really understand the reason for that. Regarding the strikeouts, if memory serves, when he retired he was the career leader in K's by a LHP.
