Michigan Basketball 2010-11

Recommended Posts

This team is better than last year's team. Darius Morris has come on by leaps and bounds.

He is a lot of fun to watch, he always seems to be in control.. and he doesn't seem to turn the ball over very much.

This young team will struggle in the b10, but they will scare some teams.

I like that Horford's getting more minutes. Morgan's not in good enough shape to play much more than 20 minutes, so it's important that Michigan has a decent backup to keep him fresh. Plus, Horford's got loads of potential.

I think an interesting thing is that Michigan has seen massive improvement in rebounding this year, mostly because Zack Novak is apparently the new Charles Barkley or something

I don't know if that can keep up in the Big 10, but if it can a good defense + good defensive rebounding will definitely keep them in most games

Good all around game by Michigan last night. They seem to be well on their way to being an NIT team at the very least hopefully. If they can go into Big Ten play 10-2 like I said they might, they have a chance at the tourney. Big 10 play will probably expose them in some games though.

I'm happy to see Horford out there but what makes you say that Morgan isn't in good enough shape? By all accounts he's lost a lot of weight and gotten himself into great shape. (Of course shape does not mean enough size or experience.)

He often looks tired on the court. He's done a lot to get to where he's at, but there's still more work to do if he wants to reach his full potential.

Big Ten coaches think Michigan is the biggest surprise in the Big Ten so far this year.

Coaches say Michigan basketball team is one of this season's surprises - AnnArbor.com

Indiana coach Tom Crean hasn’t seen a lot Big Ten basketball this season, but from what he has seen, one thing stands out.

The Michigan basketball team is surprisingly good.

The Wolverines, without a senior on their squad, are 7-2 entering their game Tuesday against North Carolina Central (7 p.m., Big Ten Network) including a win on the road at Clemson.

“If I was going to pick a team, I would probably go with Michigan,” Crean said. “I think they are playing well. Even when they’ve struggled a little bit, they’ve been creating an identity.

“…Just seeing them briefly, I think they’re the team right now that is surprising people.”

Much of that has to do with Michigan’s defense.

Michigan has held opponents to 57 points a game and limited them to 38.8 percent shooting. The Wolverines also haven’t let an opponent score more than 65 points in a game this season.

“Our defense has really improved as the year has gone on,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “Obviously it’ll be challenged much more in the next month as we continue to play a challenging schedule. We are really competing at a high level in games, and some of our guys are really getting to feel the game much better.”

Much of that has to do with sophomore point guard Darius Morris, who has had four games of 10 assists or better this year. He’s also leading Michigan in scoring (14.9 ppg.) and has played more under control than a year ago.

“Michigan has got some kids that have jumped up,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “The point guard (Morris) last year was feeling his way through the system and really made some strides.”

Michigan wasn’t the only team the Big Ten coaches noted as a surprise in the league - Minnesota and its hot start led by forward Trevor Mbakwe - was also brought up.

So, too, was the play of Ohio State freshman forward Jared Sullinger, who was named the Big Ten’s Rookie and Player of the Week this past week.

But much of that conversation ended up coming back to Michigan.

“Those guys have won some games,” Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said. “That I didn’t know if they’d be capable of winning early.”

I love the early confidence this Michigan basketball team is gaining. Our 1st two Big Ten games are at home and Prudue is without Hummel. I hope to be 10-2 (more expect I think) when we start the Big Ten schedule, starting 2-0 would only add to that confidence.

Tonight they play NC Central, I have to be honest, I am getting pretty excited about watching Michigan basketball. The play of Morris has truly been fun to watch thus far.

So lets play a game, complete this sentence. Michigan can be a tourney team only IF......

I say that the freshmen will need to learn real fast once we hit that Big Ten schedule. Good things can happen though.

Ok, lets break it down based on the Big Ten schedule and predict wins and losses. I havent looked at the whole schedule til now:

Tue., Dec. 28 vs. Purdue-W

Sun., Jan. 2 vs. Penn State-W

Wed., Jan. 5 at Wisconsin-L

Wed., Jan. 12 vs. Ohio State-L

Sat., Jan. 15 at Indiana-W

Tue., Jan. 18 at Northwestern-L

Sat., Jan. 22 vs. Minnesota-W

Thu., Jan. 27 at Michigan State-L

Sun., Jan. 30 vs. Iowa-W

Thu., Feb. 3 at Ohio State-L

Sun., Feb. 6 at Penn State-W

Wed., Feb. 9 vs. Northwestern-W

Sat., Feb. 12 vs. Indiana-W

Wed., Feb. 16 at Illinois-L

Sat., Feb. 19 at Iowa-W

Wed., Feb. 23 vs. Wisconsin-W

Sat., Feb. 26 at Minnesota-L

Sat., Mar. 5 vs. MSU-L

Looks like they have 18 Big Ten games and I have them at 10-8. I am being generous yes, but I really like this team. That leaves them at 20-10 for the season.

20-10 should get them in. 19-11 or 18-12 and they are on the bubble.

Booo this man.

I think I may be a bit too optimistic based on what everyone else says.

10-2 to start conference play. 6 wins in conference with 12 losses. 1 loss OOC against Kansas to finish 16-15. That does not get them into the NIT.

Sagarin has Michigan at 8th in the Big Ten, Ken Pom has them at 9th. I would say you are too optimistic.

If Morris continues to play well and some of the freshmen improve throughout the year, then they might manage to finish around .500. I think Morris is going to hit some rough patches and a 6-12 or 7-11 finish is more likely.

Considering Michigan has the youngest team in a major conference, and most people picked them last, I think 6-12 would be pretty good in a very difficult conference.

That record wouldn't eliminate them from consideration, would it?

They are good enough to surprise some of the tougher big ten teams. I think 7 big ten wins is a fair expectation, but I think they can exceed that if they win the close ones. This team seems much better than last year. The big ten is tough this year, but with the expanded field, it could send seven teams. If Michigan can go 10-2 and then finish 7th in the league, they will be on the bubble but at least an nit team.

They shouldn't be. If my scenario plays out, they don't have any real impressive wins to hang their hat on. They haven't beat a ranked team yet.

They finished 15-16 (17 including BTT loss against OSU) last year, with wins against #15 UCONN and #15 OSU (Without Turner) and didn't sniff the NIT. I don't see why 16 would get them in this year.

Michigan is a lot better than I thought they would be, but I still think they will have some tough times in the Big 10. The three point shooting is still not very good, and I doubt Jordan Morgan and Zack Novak will be such an effective post combo in conference play.

.500 in the Big 10 would be very impressive for this team imo. I think 7-9 or 6-10 is more likely.

The nit had plenty of .500 teams to choose from. If Michigan can win 6 games in the nation's best conference to finish 16-16 (assuming a btt first round loss), they will probably get in.

It all just comes down to winning games. The big ten will be tough, but the team can still win their share of games. If they get some luck in the close ones, they could sneak in to the NCAA. It's a huge longshot, but I thought the nit was a longshot before the season started and they appear to be better expected.

Last year the worst team they took was UNC at 16-16, but Michigan isn't UNC. They arent big ratings, don't sell out, etc. Year before the worst team was 16-14. 2008 saw Cal get in at 16-15 but they had a win against #9 Washington St.

As good as the top of the Big Ten is, the bottom is equally as bad. Who cares if you win 6 games in the toughest conference on earth if you can only beat the bottom dwellers. To get in at .500 I think some of those conference wins have to come against the top tier teams, not just bottom tier teams.
