Iverson needs more than a prayer

Recommended Posts

I think you are not understanding what Dale is saying (sorry if I am the wrong one Dale).

An example for what I think Dale is saying: as a high schooler I did not walk away from many fights. The reason? If I did, that would be my fate in school- the guy who you can steal from, rob, whatever and he will walk away. So I fought.

Even if I didn't want to, even if it was not my goal or desire..I was forced into it by situation. Situation forced me into it because that was just about all I could do if I wanted to keep face in the neighborhood.

Now, this is not to say AI's situation is one we should excuse...or that we should excuse anyone making poor choices. But understanding WHY they make those poor choices is a little important if you ask me.

When I first got out of school I worked with many young students that were in the most dire of situations. I once invited one of the kids to a Tigers game and his Dad, who he just happened to see for the first time in about a year, told him he wasn't allowed to go for no apparent reason that I could figure out. He was wasted on drugs when he said he couldn't come and probably just out of jail, probably the only reason I never seen him before. It wasn't long after that I never saw that Dad again.

He was one of about 10 kids we worked with that very easily could've taken the wrong route due to their family situation and just the crappy conditions they experienced through their lives. They were very tempted to lead the lives I think some may be suggesting here. It would've been easy to do pretty much any of the "wrong" things people are talking about here and probably looked right within their society. Believe me, it would've been easy for them to save face in their environment as well.

All of them, in their way (as far as I know since it's been 10 years since I've seen most of them), have become productive citizens and didn't become a victim of their environment. Did we help? Sure, but they did it 90% themselves and certainly are stronger people for it than I'll ever be. These kids refused to be a product of their environment because they had great character. It shone through during despite the adversities they experienced in their young lives.

Are there times you may be forced into these situations? Maybe. Probably. Heck, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say yes you probably were cornered at times into these situations. But for the most part adversity should reveal your great character not destroy it. I learned that lesson quite awhile ago through those kids.

Absolutely. I am just saying, a lot of times in the inner city it is eat or be eaten. Even if you try and avoid those situations as much as possible sometimes they come up and all you can do is be ready to handle them. I am not advocating violence, just saying that a person has to protect himself in that situation and for future situations. I don't think a bad situation or two indicates bad character overall. Nor should it be an indictment on a person forever.

RealGM: Basketball Wiretap Archives: Players Upset With Smith Over Iverson Reporting

Players Upset With Smith Over Iverson Reporting

Over the past few months, ESPN The Magazine has run a featured entitled 'Player X', where an NFL player has weighed anonymously on various issues.

In response to Stephen A. Smith's reporting that Allen Iverson has been dealing with gambling and alcohol issues, an anonymous player from the NBA has responded.

"Now, everyone in the league knows Allen has been a big partier his entire career," writes the player. "Crazy thing is, he actually drinks a lot less than he used to. I know there was talk because Allen was at some party on a night he was supposed to be playing. But right now NBA players are just talking about how they can't believe Stephen A. chose to write that column now, when Allen's partying is way, way tamer than it used to be. We all think the timing is suspicious.

"I haven't talked to Allen, so I don't know how he feels about all this. But guys around the league think Stephen A. took a cheap shot, that he kicked a man when he was down. Allen is dealing with his sick daughter and a divorce. That's the reason he's taking time away. But I guess the truth doesn't sell newspapers. Fact is, if Stephen A. really cared about him, as he says he does, he'd be going to AI's friends and family, trying to say something that way. He wouldn't be blasting him in the media."

The player also mentions that several members of the Sixers will confront Smith during his next locker room visit.
