Big Ten will "really be more aggressive about" adding 12th school says Barry Alvarez

Recommended Posts

Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez says Big Ten will amplify call for a 12th team - ESPN

"We're irrelevant for the last three weeks of the football season because we're not playing," Alvarez said Friday.

Paterno has stumped for expansion several times, but Delany -- who was unavailable for comment -- told ESPN.com this spring that the league has no immediate plans to add a 12th team.

"There's not an obvious move," Delany said in May. "There might be to some coaches, including Coach Paterno, but it's not as obvious to the university presidents and to the athletic directors.

"There are a lot [of schools] that could take a lot away, but there aren't a lot that could bring so much to make the choice an easy one. You have to have a lot to make something go like this, and it's broader than really a championship game or a basketball tournament."

How does this process work? Does the conference first need approval from the NCAA, and then do they just contact schools that they'd be interested in and start to negotiate? Does the conference that said team would be leaving have any say?

Who is the natural fit? I mean, Notre Dame is, except for the fact that they make oodles of money by being Independent.

I would only consider ND. They are the only school in the region that would add significant value to the league.

What would be interesting is if they could get a Toronto university to start up a big time athletics program. Maybe they have a "trial" period in the MAC while they get their feet wet, and if things go well they join the Big Ten. Certainly an off the wall idea, but if it worked it could be very lucrative for the Big Ten to really tap into the Canadian market.

Until Canada offers full ride athletic scholarships, this won't happen. Nice thought 'outside the box' though.

Pittsburgh would make sense because of Penn State. It gives them a regional rival that they have some past with. It also helps the other Big Ten teams in terms of saying that is "Big Ten country" and makes it even easier for the other 10 schools to recruit the area.

I like UCONN as the 12th team ... Get's the Big Ten into the NY market and their sports program's are all pretty good. Academics are on par with Big Ten I believe as well.

As a Big Ten grad in SEC Country, it's nice to know that while our teams suck at football, they are all quality institutions. I heard somebody not from the midwest describe Notre Dame as the "Ivy League of the Midwest" and I couldn't help but laugh. Notre Dame is at best on par with the Big Ten schools. As an engineer, I know the Big Ten Schools regularaly are near the top of rankings for engineering schools. In short, it won't just be any school, although Pitt and Notre Dame fit the bill.

Does the conference really need a 12th team to become relevant? How about sweeping the upcoming bowls and beating up quality out of conference opponents during the regular season? How about adding SEC home & homes to the OOC?

In the event a dozenth team is added, why would Missouri bolt for the Big Ten? Have they had problems with the Big XII? I like the Toronto idea, but seems to me (without too much investigating) that there are too many logistics obstacles.

Here is our last discussion on it:

http://www.motownsports.com/forums/college-sports/51311-big-ten-considering-12th-team-6.html

I still like Syracuse, if Notre Dame is not an option, (which they aren't and probably never will be)

With a conference championship, Ohio State and Michigan MUST remain on the same side. NO WAY do I want to see Michigan and Ohio State play a rematch game in the Big Ten championship game. (it doesn't look like there would be a danger in that happening anytime soon anyway! :hurt:)

I remember Syracuse being mentioned to open up the NY market.

I don't see ND joining. They're already in the Big East for other sports. I would think if football does join a conference, it will be due to the fact that they have flagged to the point of losing the ability to secure a TV deal like it has now, and they would see the Big East as the easier path to its "lofty exectations".

If ND decided to join a conference in the next 2 years, it would be the Big Ten IMO. They already play a HEAVY Big 10 schedule. I don't think the Big Ten is going to wait for them any longer though, so it probably kills any chance on ND being in the Big 10. I'll bet they contact ND one more time, but I think they add a team by the 2012 season at the latest.

I'd like to see them on the same side, too. But I hope that this wouldn't be the reasoning to put them there.

My preferences would go like this:

Notre Dame

Pittsburgh

Missouri

Iowa State (Why have I never heard them mentioned as a candidate, anyway?)

Syracuse

These are the only 5 options I can really see... I guess the only other one I can really see would be Cincinnati, and they would be much farther down on my list. I would really be okay with any of those five, though.

I certainly hope it is the main reason. No way should a rivalry as big as Ohio State and Michigan be subject to the possibility that they would play each other in back to back weeks. I can guarantee that they are not going to stop playing each other in the last week of the Big Ten season, and if both teams won all their games on their particular side of the Big Ten (if they were put on opposite sides), that game would me worth FAR less than the B10 championship game they would play the following week against each other.

Ohio State and Michigan should only play once a season, unless they both are just so good that they deserve a rematch in the BCS title game.

while you are at it, might as well throw louisville on the list. They havent been in the Big East but 4 or 5 years, and have some decent teams usually.

Yeah, I guess... but they'd immediately be the second smallest B10 school, and they're kinda far south. But I guess I'd slot them in sixth, ahead of Cincinnati.
