Any article that says a team has no weaknesses and points to Sean Casey on the team is either a lie or written by somebody who doesn't know what he's talking about.

A lot of people like Casey, for whatever reason.

Those who don't watch him regularly tend to like him too much.

Those who do watch him regularly tend not to like him enough.

He is rather painful to watch on a regular basis.

The Tigers have lots of weaknesses and I'm not even talking about Casey or any individual player. They have an overall low team OBP, they don't see enough pitches to make the opposing starter work hard, they have an abysmal hitting bench, they have mediocre defensive corner outfielders, and they have a huge injury risk.

Give me a couple of minutes and I'll think of more - oh yeah, lack of left-handed power hitters.

Guillen, Casey, Magglio, Sheffield, Polanco and Pudge.

Did I miss anyone? I don't think the pitching staff is actually that injury prone.

Maroth, Ledezma (at least from his minor league days), Verlander had some injury questions last season, and Monroe missed time for injury last season.

They are all risks of varying degrees but there are a lot of risks on the team.

The ones that the team really can't afford injuries to are:

Guillen, Sheffield, and Verlander.

Ledezma is another fairly vital piece to the puzzle given the lack of depth of left handed relievers in the system.

I know they got by without Sheffield last year but I really think they need him healthy and productive to contend this season.

Why is Ledezma that critical to lose to injury?

I guess it isn't entirely critical. Just critical due to the response they would likely make. Given he will likely be the primary lefty out of the pen, if he goes down to a long term injury they will likely respond with a trade.

Now I probably shouldn't have put him in the same category as the other three that I consider somewhat risks. But it would be a big deal.

I gotcha, I just figured that with Campusano and now Eischen in the mix that the Tigers were going to go into the spring looking at Ledezma as a long reliever if he didn't grab the last rotation spot.

This may be slightly true, but relative to the other MLB teams, who do you see as have less weaknesses?? Can't a team have certain weaknesses yet still win 100 games & a World Series? That is the ultimate goal!

Sure. The Tigers had all of these same weaknesses last year and look what they accomplished. Some of the weaknesses did not manifest themselves (for example they were very healthy) and others were overcome by their strengths. This is a philosophical answer but I don't think it really matters how many weaknesses a team has - it is much more important for the team to maximize their strengths, which the Tigers did exceptionally well last year.

EXACTLY.

You guys love to pick apart what's wrong with this team, but if you put another random team in Tiger uniforms, there would be just as much (and probably more) to be concerned about.

Our weaknesses are only as bad as the next team's ability to exploit them.

As much as it pains people to acknowledge this, add Zumaya to that list. He still has yet to make it through a professional season without some injury concerns....back, shoulder, wrist...

Yes add him to my list. Just a simple oversight.

I would guess he will still be the primary lefty. Wasting his talents as a Long Reliever would not be smart.

They have an overall low team OBP,

This is the one that concerns me the most, especially since I have heard the manager and coaches allude to the notion that they really could care less about OBP. I wasn't on this board last season, so this topic may have beaten to death, but did anyone else pick up on that from any interviews last year?

With his age, it doesn't seem like Kenny Rogers could be considered a slam-dunk to pitch a full season, either. I'm not saying it's likely, it's just quite possible that he misses some time.

Does anyone know a good website that tracks individual player's injury history, not just missed time on the DL, but specifics about the injuries? Was looking around, couldn't find much.

No team is perfect but I think the Tigers are more "set" than the other teams. We all have concerns about injuries, vets fading, rookies repeating, etc. but when your major concern is who will replace Walker and you have 5-7 possible options, you are in good shape.
