My Irrational Hatred for David Eckstein

Well, maybe it is not so irrational after last night's game.

This dude has ALWAYS bugged me and been one of my least favorite. I have no idea why, but every time I see him at bat or in the field I want to punch him in teh face.

He shoudl be staring in TLC's "Little People, Big World" and yet he is almost single handedly responsile for beating the Tigers in Game 4 (well Rolen and our bullpen blowup helped him out).

So, I figure the most annoying player in baseball deserves his own thread. My annoyance of him has now grown to full blown hatred. Jady Molina is creeping up this list too.

This is not aimed at Tigercub33, but at everybody who has been saying that he's a gimmick and doesn't belong in the majors. Eckstein has solid stats, year in and year out. He makes contact with the ball and gets on base. Who cares how small you are when you can make things happen batting lead-off. Granderson is one of my favorite players on the team, but he has stunk since late July in the lead-off spot. I would have loved to have a gimmick like Eckstein this season and all the seasons he's been around.

He is hated because we wish we had a scrappy leadoff guy like him.

Wrong. I enjoy scrappy players. This guy is just a plain annoyance.

Peopel complained about Bradley sprinting from 3B to Home on a HR. Where are the complaints about Eckstein and his seemilingly cocaine/meth induced twitches at the plate. Also, EVERY throw this guy make from SS to 1B seems like it will go over the 1Bs head, yet it doesn't (also another annoyance).

Jackal, the guy can obviously play and it is not a gimmick. I still hate him though. He easily outranks my hatred for ANY Yankee and is compared by only my hatred for Joe Crede.

You haven't called him a gimmick, but throughout this series and even last night people called him that and similar terms.

So Placido Polanco is one of your favorite players???

I like him. Polanco and Eckstein are comperable, except Eckstein walks more, steals more bases and has a higher career OBP, where Polanco has a higher SLG % and OPS. If I had to choose between which one I'd rather have bat 2nd in the lineup, I think I'd rather have Eckstein.

No way. You shouldn't ask for less production just because it's the #2 hitter. There's no rule that says it's ok for your #2 hitter to suck just because he gets on base. He throws like a girl and really is a poor hitter.

Well, I would disagree with you. The 7 point difference in OBP is overshadowed by the +17 in AVG for PP and the +50 in SLG.

The only reason Eckstein is a big deal is because he is 5'2". He can certainly play, no doubt (he has proven that time and time again).

I am just stating that I find him highly annoying and that has grown into a severe hatred.

I also found myself hating Eckstein this morning. But not because of his "scrappy" play. That's an asset to him and he would be a favorite of mine were he in the Olde English D.

No, the part I hate about him is how lucky he got last night. Granderson falls down on what would have been a relatively easy catch. Then Monroe comes back and barely misses another shot. (It's my belief that Monroe misplayed that ball right off the bat. Not necessarily an error on Craig's part, but an underestimation of how it was hit.) Two lucky, lucky "hits" and now Eckstein is the toast of the town.

But give the little guy credit. He opened the Cardinal offense by going 0-2 against Bonderman and fighting, fighting, fighting until he got a hit. Something like a seven or eight pitch at-bat ending with him standing on 1B. Very frustrating.

I'll take a player like that to leadoff any day.

It's my preference that the top 2 hitters in a lineup have high OBP, plate disicipline, and speed. Eckstein beats Polanco on all three accounts, although not by much.

I'm not say I don't want Polanco in the lineup, but if I had to choose between the two for who will bat 2nd, I would go with Eckstein. In fact, I'd prefer him to lead off over Granderson since Eckstein's K rate is much much lower.

I give OBP more credence at the top of the lineup than average. From 3-5 in the lineup I prefer average and slugging % - it's their job to drive in runs.

BTW, MLB lists him officially as 5' 7", 165 lbs.

How is defense not a factor?

They were about equal is a horrible year for Polanco who had a bad back most of the season. Usually Polanco is far more valuable.

He beat Polanco by 7 flippin points on OBP. Polanco has a higher AVG and a vastly higher SLG. There is no comparison. If your leadoff man is on 1B, do you want him advanced by a Walk, or by a single or double (a single puts him at 3B most likley and a double scores him)?

Also, the "Little Engine That Could" strikes out more. Its hard for a player to advance on a strikeout....and the job of a #2 guy is to advance the leadoff hitter (when they are on base).

To Tiger's credit, "irrational hatred" is clearly disclosed in the thread title. No need to defend the admittedly "irrational".

Its easy to not like him; he reached base 4 out of 5 times last night.

1) came back from 0-2 (IIRC) to start game, fouled off 3-4 good pitches and slapped a single.

2) reached safely because Granderson fell down

3) doubled in a run

4) Lined out... er... I mean off Monroe's glove.

He was the primary beneficiary of a lot of crappy luck last night.
