Also money. The backup group this year (when you look at all 2nd and 3rd strings is bad). The cap went down for like the first time ever in 2021. So where are you gonna save some money? Right there. Josh McCowin at 8 million or an UFDA at 500K?

Maybe this should be in the NCAA thread but to follow that thought, how ironic would it be for good but not great college QBs at big name schools to end up suffering huge income cuts from their college NIL income to UDFA status in the NFL?

I'm not sure it's a good thing the Lions will be starting an UDFA at he slot. Hopefully it's a brad Holmes diamond in the rough.

He has played well.  Let’s see how he performs with the lights on. I think it’s great.  Find those who can play.  Came out of the big 12, he was seeing legit competition.

Lets be honest, Parker has played well and it's a nice story but the main reason why he could very well earn a roster spot is because the Lions secondary is an unmitigated disaster.

I'm not so sure that Reynolds makes the final cut. They haven't even played him against backups yet, he played against the 4th quarter leftovers/guys who likely won't make their respective rosters. Based on usage, it seems like they value Mills more and Jefferson for sure. I guess we'll see.

What if Parker is good?  How is that a disaster?  I don’t understand how someone being really good implies a disaster.

Reynolds has been standing out on special teams during camp too.  Swift, Williams, Jefferson and Reynolds.  Sexy back field.

If starting a UDFA at Slot CB gets us one step closer to the #1 overall pick I'm cool with that. All I ask out of this season is competent coaching with no on-field mistakes, confidence in the playcallers (Lynn and Glenn), player development from the rookies and 2nd year guys, and no one to get seriously hurt. I'm not overly hopeful Goff is going to be the answer moving forward, but I'm also not super pessimistic about him either. I just want to be in the best position heading into next years draft to be able to take any player, QB or otherwise, that we want.

Ravens just traded rookie cb Shaun Wade to the Patriots for a rumored 2022 5th to 7th round pick. I have no idea what spurned this for the Ravens cause by advanced metrics Wade was looking like one of the best rookies during preseason.

Couple that with his 1st round grade prior to last season and I would've taken a flyer on him if I were the Lions for that price.

Maybe they (the Ravens) spotted some kind of problem with him and are getting out early?

Or it looks like... just a numbers issue?

Why the **** would the Ravens trade him to a top competitor (Patriots) and why didn't the Lions nab him if he's a real find...?

Yeah that would be what worries me,  I don't know their depth chart but perhaps it's just a numbers game or their analytics aren't as high on him as the widespread ones suggest.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to diminish Parker's ability as he could very well be good but my point is that the competition is paltry at best. In any event, it's a good story so hopefully he takes advantage.

As far as Reynolds is concerned, he's only played against players most of whom will be cut so unless he has a huge game in the last preseason game, he's an extreme longshot. You can tell who they like based on when they play them in preseason and Reynolds has gotten mop up duties in the first two games behind the likes of Mills and Igwebuike. Reynolds did look good in mop up duty so hopefully he gets a real chance in this game against better competition (assuming that Indy doesn't rest all the backups too).

Detroit Lions

Several evaluators pointed to Detroit as the next-worst roster going right now. One front office exec whose team faced the Lions this preseason told me the competition was so poor it was hard to draw conclusions from it. "They don't have players," he said. "It's bad. Good thing (coach Dan Campbell and GM Brad Holmes) got six-year deals. It'll take three years just to dig out of this." There is no history of this team sustaining any real measure of success for ages, primary ownership keeps getting shuffled around and game-management could prove to be a problem for this group, too. They are going to give up a ton of points and offensive coaches who I trust believe Jared Goff is really going to struggle without Sean McVay in his ear. "They will be in the market for a QB in 2022," as one exec put it.

the only issue I would take with is the bit about Goff. I doubt it will hurt a QB not to have coach in his ear that didn't want to put him a position to succeed at what he was good at.

Seems about right.  I don't know about you guys but I'll be watching the top college QB prospects very closely this season because it's quite likely that the Lions will be in the running for one of them.

It’s obvious they were quoting from the Steelers game, when the lions were trotting out Tavai and Boyle and not using starters.

Impossible that they are worse on defense than last year.  This team is going to surprise a lot of people.  Just another hack taking a shot at the already beaten lions.  One time you’d like to see a writer actually evaluate the team instead of just carry through the history.  Never happens.

I’ll be watching fields dominate after the red rocket gets benched.

Yeah I agree with that article except for the part about Goff, will he continue his downward trend even more without McVay? Quite possibly but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion.  Goff has the physical tools and for the most part isn't a bad QB, the overall numbers aren't good but that's because when he has a bad game he has a REALLY bad game, but lets face it whether he has a really bad game or just a sub par game chances are we weren't winning that game anyway.

As we have seen the last few years almost all the games we have won it took a spectacular QB game to get it done and Goff has shown that he is more than capable of doing that. For reference last year he had 6 games where he threw 300+ yards, had a 70+% completion percentage and a rating over a 100.
