He never did baseball until the Tigers hired him.

Clearly the case, and he really hasn't grown into the role.

Id have to imagine there are other broadcasters who didn't do baseball before getting PBP jobs who are better at it (Steve Berthiaume with the DBacks comes to mind)

I think Shep is priced to move.

Tigers don’t care as long as he can read drop-ins without stumbling.

A few years ago Simmons was the consensus best fielding SS in the majors. Still has some chops with the glove.

Not only best in the majors but some thought the best since Ozzie Smith.

This is what surprises me.  He doesn’t seem to have changed since he took over.  I guess I expected him to become more polished by now but he still seems like a multi sport fill in that is just choppy with his delivery and just not at ease with the broadcast.

Part of the problem might be working with his childhood heroes Jack Morris, Kirk Gibson and Dan Petry every night. A PxP has got to feel at least equal to his analysts, and Shep doesn’t come off that way. He’s still so deferential, even obsequious, to them.

How do you not turn the double play on Nelson Cruz   Cost is a run.

Willi hitched a bit on the throw, might have been the difference. Looked like Schoop wanted a replay but the bench didn't agree.

The whole TV crew is choppy, really. They basically have rotated, to varying degrees, four different color guys in there all season. To be fair to Shep, that probably doesn't help.

As this team gets better, one hopes they to stabilize the TV Broadcast some.

That is certainly the case with Morris.  I don’t watch every game, but it seems to me like he’s toned down a little bit on some of the selfishness but there is still some back in my day chatter.

Gibson is a tough listen in just a delivery sense, but he still brings some insight.

I like Petry.  I wish he and Morris were swapped.

I do like that the Tigers rotate pitcher and hitter in the second seat.  I like to hear the perspective from both sides of the plate.  And with Gibson, he can deliver a bit of the game management as well.  I like he will take a spot in the game and give some options explaining those and the possible ramifications of those, and then flatly saying that, hey, it could work this way or that, and a decision made now might just toss the W to one side or the other.

A couple years ago or more wasn’t there a broadcaster from Erie I think who in a pinch did radio or TV coverage for a game? He was really good. There’s a lot of people who could do a good job at this.

Dan Hasty from West Michigan?  I think a lot of folks liked him.  I think he did radio and Dickerson moved to TV for a series?

Dan Hasty (from West Michigan) did PBP with Jimmy during a Sunday game with the As earlier this year...
