Building a Tigers Contender in 2022

Recommended Posts

in 2022, the Tigers have 6 positions covered reasonably: C (Haase/Rogers); DH Miggy; 2b Schoop; 3b Candy; OF1 Grossman; OF2 Baddoo/Hill or Baddoo/Daz. 1B and OF3 will be Tork and Greene by July 1, but they need to add someone flexible enough to cover until then. Bench 2 of Niko/Short/HCastro/Paredes/Clemens (Move on from Willi IMO). That leaves SS as the biggest hole, now and in the future. Simien is the guy who wont cost 250M+. Dinlger, Kreidler, and Lipcius in the 2023 mix.

CJ Cron wouldn't be a bad stop gap if we could get him on a 1yr deal. It was short lived but he looked like he was on his way to a good season last year before the injury and he's been real solid this year as well.

Even factoring in him playing at Coors he has still been 20% better than league average,  only 31 too so he's not that old.

I was watching a documentary on Viet Nam last night, and Morley Safer was interviewing some disheartened, disillusioned soldiers in 1968 whose company had just gotten creamed, two thirds of them killed, in the Tet offensive.  After it was broadcast LBJ called the president of CBS and said "your boy just s*** on the American flag".

I was there! News media made it very difficult for soldiers to come "home" after that. (Wrong forum).

Do we really need a stopgap at first base next year?

In BP today, about last night:

Spencer Torkelson, 3B, Detroit Tigers (Double-A Erie): 4-4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI.
Riley Greene, OF, Detroit Tigers (Double-A Erie): 2-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, K.
The Tigers have been surprisingly decent, hovering around .500 for the season and looking like they are generally trending in the right direction. With the help of Torkelson and Greene—the crown jewels of the farm system—2022 could be the year they make a serious push for the playoffs.

That kind of depends when they arrive. They're not seeing Toledo this year, and I think it's a long shot they see Detroit without seeing Toledo.

I would normally say they'll come up late April to manipulate their service time, but with CBA negotiations happening (remember those?), I wouldn't make any bets on what next year looks like.

Not necessarily but that was in response to the hypothetical situation that Tork doesn't get called up till late in the year. In that scenario we would need somebody to bridge the gap,  it could be Schoop but most prefer him to just stay at 2nd.

It wouldn't be top priority or anything but I was just throwing out a potential affordable name if the Tigers decide to go in that direction.

We are sort of debating this over in the other thread (the context being the Renato Nunez callup), but it would help if they had someone to tag team with Miggy until Tork is ready.

Not that Schoop has been a complete butcher at 1B, but they would be a lot better off up the middle if he was playing his natural position all season

Aside from Cron, I'm not sure what other options there are externally that would be affordable.

the complication at 1st is you still have Cabrera to deal with. How much do you want to invest in a 1B who doesn't play every day? If you can get production from a guy like Schoop who can swing back and forth to 2b and then have the second 2b guy (probably a lower OPS) be the swing in and out of the line-up when Cabrera plays the field you end up with something that hasn't worked all that badly this season once Cabrera pulled out of his April funk. Tigers are just kind of stuck - they have to play 1b a little by ear because you just have no idea what Cabrera does next season. Sure in May it was easy to say they will just have plan on buying him out in 22, but *if* he finishes the season having produced for 4 solid months that is nowhere near as easy a call. And likewise if he continues not get hurt playing 1st he'll keep arguing not to DH exclusively.

If they can have somebody (be it internally or externally) who can trade DH/1B duties with Cabrera that would allow Schoop to play his position, I'd probably sacrifice whatever flexibility that requires from a roster perspective in order to make that happen.

I've just seen Willi screw up too many throws at 2B this year lol

I think that would be an extremely short bridge. That's why I'd prefer someone that can fall back into a utility role or to Toledo and noone would care. Also if the bridge guy is not spectacular noone would care. Perfect candidate for a very, very short bridge: Aderlin Rodriguez.

Once Tork comes up, I want him playing 1B.

It wouldn't bother me to play Cabrera 1 or 2 days a week at 1st and let Tork DH those games.

I don't want it the other way around. And I don't want him (Tork) flip-flopping between 1B and 3B.

Let Candy handle 3B for at least 2022. After that, maybe the team can play around with that formula. But for 2022, I don't think they should.

I'd like to see Haase and Rogers get some time at first base in spring training. I think that would be a good way to keep both of them in the lineup. Haase in left has been ok this year but we've had guys injured and there may be less opportunities for him to play next year in the outfield.

I don't think Rogers offense will be quite enough to warrant him playing 1B. If he's not catching, he should be on the bench as there are better hitters who could use the AB's.

Don’t see a scenario where the Tigers need/want Rogers to play 1st.

Boy missing out on Adames looms larger each week as he transforms the Brewers into a solid series contender and gets MVP mention. Twice we missed on him. Crawford was a great sign for the Giants and would have been a nice 2 year fill in for us to wait for the shortstop we didn't draft to get ready.  Still can't believe the Red Sox got the best player in the draft because we passed on him.
