Dan Campbell: Genius or Goof Ball?

Either this guy is a freaking genius and he's playing us all or he's the biggest goofball ever.   But you know what?  At least he is entertaining,  at least he answers questions.   This is far better than the last 2 coaches who stood up there and didn't say a thing.     Nothing will be more entertaining than beleaguered Bobby Ross (ABANDON SHIP WOMP WOMP WOMP), but the fact that this guy is not treating being a football coach like it's some kind of state secret is refreshing.   I think he'll make it fun for the players again, and that would be far better than the slob that was here the last 3 yuears.     I hope he's successful because if he's not, he 's Harbaugh 2.0  (Who's got it better than us?).

I do not think one has much of anything to do with the other.  He could be goofy in front of the camera and a great coach or goofy in front of the camera and be a bad coach..time will tell, but I do not necessarily equate the 2.

he's a football coach.  the "intelligence" needed to be a successful football coach is extremely overrated.  get dudes to run through a brick wall for you, who cares if youre a goofball?

i like campbell.  i hope he's successful.

Same.  The players are loving this coaching staff.  I’ll take that all day long.  Campbell won’t be doing much of the Xs and Os anyways.   A good head coach’s job is to coach the coaches and motivate the players to bring it on Sunday’s.

Who knows if this will work, but I love what the lions have done.

I've seen some interviews Campbell has given and he's not the meathead people make him out to be. Being that he isn't a play caller by trade, he's going to defer those duties to more experienced people. It was Patricia's defense and a defensive coordinator was hired to be his assistant. With Campbell, I full believe this is Lynn and Glenn's offense and defense. I think we are seeing some of the results of Campbell's effectiveness as over 80 Lions showed up for voluntary practice.

I would have to imagine that it must help motivation wise for players to have a coach who isn't an out of shape slob, who shows up late to team meetings,  wears a Roger Goodell clown t-shirt, and yells at you about conditioning and working harder too.

Within reason, I don't really care what MCDC does outside the lines. If he thinks wearing a helmet to a press conference, speaking from the heart, and being a football guy will help him motivate his players, more power to him.

I do think it's fair though to expect that the same antics will not be handled the same way in the media if he goes 3-14 this year.

It depends on HOW they go 3-14.  If they lose that much because they lack talent and are clearly in absolute rebuild then he'll be fine.  If they have that record because he clearly made really dumb decisions or had a nonsensical strategy (see: Matt Patricia on both), then yeah, he'll get heat.

I think he gets a honeymoon through 2 seasons.   If we aren't at least .500 by the middle of the 3rd season, people will severely turn on him.

I think Lions fans know this year is not going to be about winning.  It's about setting up the next couple of drafts.

I am not sure how much leeway I am going to give him.  For sure this year is a wash, but if by some miracle they have a winning record then that raises expectations for the following year, but I for sure will give him AT LEAST 2 seasons.

It will be clear right away if it is working. There are a lot of guys on the staff who understand the media side of the game. As the losses mount, and they will, we will see if the leaks start.

It will also be clear if we just see the obvious on field play calling and coaching mistakes that we've seen from prior regimes. If he's got the defense rushing 3 or in a formation not guarding against the Hail Mary, we will know real quick.

I agree to an extent. I think a lot of the fanbase is stupid though. That's not exclusive to the Lions fanbase by any means (really it's more a statement on humanity), but I think that there will be certain talking heads in the Detroit sports media who, if he goes 3-14 and comes out next offseason in a racing helmet, will erupt into fauxrage that he's making us a laughing stock. I think that happens regardless of how we look going 3-14. And those fans who follow those talking heads will in turn erupt into fauxrage that he's making us a laughing stock.

I think the intelligent fanbase and intelligent members of the media will certainly give him at least two years, and will by-and-large allow the on-field product speak to his efficacy as a head coach.

I'm not even sure what is so "goofball" about Campbell? He had the kneecap soundbite in the middle of a 90 minute speech and the racing helmet? He seems refreshingly candid and to the point. That seems to be what the media claims they want. I think too much is being looked into this because he is such a stark different to Patricia.

Virtually everybody is picking the Lions to finish last and win 6 games at the most so I hope these same pundits that say the team sucks aren't going to turn on Campbell if the Lions do struggle this year.

It all depends.   To me, Matt Patricia was worse at 6-10 than Rod Marinelli was at 0-16.   Marinelli had next to nothing to work with....Kitna/Orlovsky at QB.   Patricia had talent when he came in.   It's not just the record, it's how it looks.

If the Lions win 6 games this year, I'd consider that a success.   But I just don't know.   I think there is a chance they could be better than we think......because that buffoon "rocket scientist" isn't their coach.   They were better than they looked the last 2/3 years, even after Patricia chased away the better talent.  .  I just think he's the worst NFL head coach since I paid attention to NFL coaching (about 1980). I just can't believe they gave him a third season.   Usually I say you need to give a coach at least 3 years, but there are times when it is just so obvious that you can't.

EDITED TO ADD:   I think the reason I just hate him so much was his arrogance.    You don't get to be an arrogant failure because you once ran errands for Bill Belichick (who may owe most of his success to Tom Brady and cheating).

I heard Cowherd the other day say, when talking about the racing helmet thing, "Ya know who likes that? Dumb people."

I usually like what he has to say but I think he's completely missing the point on Campbell. If no one is following, you are not a leader. So far, this team is following Campbell in a big way.
