I can't remember a Wednesday scheduled off-day that didn't involve the All-Star Break

There are several players you can call the team MVP this season.  Casey Mize, Jeimer Candelario, Spencer Turnbull, but there is always that guy who is not a statistical MVP, but changes the course of the team and that guy is Eric Haase.  10-5 in games he starts.

They were 12-24 when they called him up.  Since he's been with the team they have a record of 11-8 and we've seen a fairly abrupt turnaround of Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal.    Even Jimenez and Holland seem to be a bit better.   Is it him or are the pitching coaches making an impact at the same general time as his call-up?    Our current Catcher ERAs are Haase at 3.33 and Rogers at 2.80

I noted earlier that Haase is listed as a native born Detroiter which has to be pretty sweet for him right now. I like the him as well but if I’m pushed to select an MVP based on the season thus far, I’m down for Robbie Grossman. I think Grossman is a good clubhouse example for the younger guys to look to regarding day to day work habits. Grossman is a grinder of sorts. He’s not flashy but he is smart in the game and is always going to give 100%.

I don't see how one player could make that kind of difference.  Maybe things that Fetters has been teaching them since March are finally clicking.  Or maybe, it just a hot streak like April was a cold streak.

Some of that is good luck and some bad luck, but I don't see how they keep Ramos around. Schoop is hitting, Miggy is not getting cut. Don't need another DH.

Tigers have also benefited from addition by subtraction in the rest of the roster.  The players they have stopped playing - Jones, Ramos, Lange were negative WAR, plus Schoop and Cabrera, Badoo (even with the big start) are hitting more than they were in April.

A month ago, May 2, the Tigers were playing .276 ball and had the worst record in baseball by 2.5 games and the worst record in the American League by 3.5 games. Now just a month later on June 2 they have a better record this season to date than 6 MLB teams. Never saw that coming. I thought it just as likely they'd finish the season with a better record than only 6 MLB teams all-time.

We need to enjoy it while we can because we are doing this with Skubal and Mize on a course for 200 IP and the hard reality is they will probably throw closer to 100. Once the pitching subsides we would need some of the young hitters to step up to sustain near 500 play. It's not impossible and M Cabrera is still a wild card. The under is still the safer bet.

Rich Hill won AL Pitcher of the Month, I thought Mize had a shot at it which would have been the first time a Tigers won the award since Verlander(I don't know the year but I presume it was 2016) but ultimately it went to the former Wolverine Hill and his sub 1 ERA for the month.  On a side note it's hard to believe that he is still around and having this kind of success at 41 years old.

Ramos and Greiner are bad catchers. I think most of the catcher ERA differences is pitcher improvement and some luck, but a portion of it could also be that they are both bottom tier defensive catchers. Ramos used to at least be able to hit, so he brought other value. I'm not sure why Greiner was ever the backup this year to begin with. He shouldn't even be taking up a 40 man roster spot.

Hill has pitched for 10 MLB teams in his career.  Not quite the jersey collection that Edwin Jackson has, but still, an impressive wardrobe.

Greiner is probably on the 40 because he was to begin with entering this season and they probably preferred Rogers catching everyday in Toledo just in case he put something together.

Given our situation, the Tigers really should ride out Haase and Rogers for the rest of the season.  Have Greiner at the ready in Toledo and thank Ramos for a couple of good weeks and hand him his severance check.

Agreed. He's a dirtball...in a good way. : )

It was all revenue based. The fact you would have everyone off work compared to Wednesday post holiday.

Agreed.  You can see the way that Rogers and Haase interact with pitchers, they seem to have a pretty good dynamic, and Rogers is a very skilled defensive C.  Ramos is a train wreck behind the plate, and Griener is nothing special defensively, and a non existent hitter.

I think Rogers and Haase should stay in there as long as they are doing the job.

Daz will carry that trade.

Or not.

Not. JV helped Houston win a World Series, threw a no hitter and won the Cy Young award. Maybe they may have won the WS without him, we'll never know. But that's worth much more than a backup catcher and a minor league outfielder. But look at all the money we saved.....

So Rogers is our first real return from the JV trade...

With Daz visible on the horizon at least, at Toledo...

And Perez looking like he'll flame out with (multiple) shoulder issues...

Probably the only way that trade ends up being a win is if rogers or daz can at some point be flipped for a lottery ticket prospect that works out

Rogers hasn't hit well but if he's bringing sub-4era from our pitchers....gawd almighty

We don't know how much of that is him.  Catcher ERA is not reliable over a small sample size.  You need enough games so that you can compare two catchers catching the same set of pitchers over a lot of games.

So is that a season's worth or a couple more months?
