Under the Radar Breakout Lions Player 2021

Recommended Posts

Lots of changes expected for the Lions with the coaching changes...

Who do you think is a player that is under the radar on the Lions that this new coaching regime will be able to get to play better in 2021? A breakout season so to speak...

I'm going to place my vote for Will Harris.

I think Glenn and Pleasant will improve everyone's play in the secondary, and that includes Harris, who has the athletic ability, but has never done much, if anything at Safety. Glenn said he expects his safeties to make plays on the ball, and cited 4-5 annual interceptions by his safeties... Walker has done it before, and I think they will get him back to doing it again (poor 2020)... but I think the guy who will actually break out is Harris.

Anyone have other ideas...?

I like the prospects of Tavai.  He was overweight at 270. Seeing him at 245 should help his agility and quickness.  He will never have coverage speed, but can be a solid positional LB.

on offense,  Cephus.  He isn’t fast but runs good routes.  If he can find gaps like he did in WI there is no reason he can’t be a quality contributor.

Does Goff count? The national narrative that he's some god awful QB because he was sent from a media giant to Detroit along with two 1sts and a 3rd is not accurate or fair.

He was not good last year, but he was also battling injury and an oil and water relationship with his head coach. I think he's going to tick off the same fans who hated Stafford because he wasn't Mahomes, but he'll still be a decent, serviceable, NFL QB.

Otherwise I'll go with Romeo Okwara (if he counts either). He managed 10 sacks last year on a defense that did not even try to pressure the QB. I'm really intrigued to see what he can do on a team that lets him loose.

I get the Goff and Romeo ideas... low expectations that could possibly be exceeded by a fairly wide margin... and nationally well, well-below the radar...

I really like your Julian Okwara idea Buddha...

Still very young and highly athletic... but only played 6 games in 2020 due to injuries and... there's a lot of upside there...

goff is a former #1 overall pick and the face of the team.  im not sure how he is under the radar.

i dont see the fascination with ceephus.  he's slow and has trouble catching the ball.  i think he'll be out of the league in a few years and is lucky he's on a team that has no talent at receiver like the lions.

I didn't pick anyone on offense...

I was going to say Amon-Ra...

But I think I am going to select Perriman instead. I think expectations of him are close to nil... But I think he will be the deep focal point for Goff and have a big year for us... Everyone else (for the most part) will be the underneath routes (could be a lot of YAC opportunity if they get guys some open space...); but that means underneath will be congested by a lot of options so there will be a lot of competition for those catches/ yards...

I'm thinking Perriman pretty much gets the deep balls mostly to himself. He has the speed... just needs to maintain health and catch the balls coming his way...

He's a former #1 but pretty much everyone is intensely down on him... I think he's under the radar in that sense. I get why Cardinal selected him...

But Cephus? Yeah.... I concur.

I think St. Brown is going to be a real surprise.  I think his skill set matches up well with what Goff and Lynn like to do.

In a perfect world I could see him being this years Justin Jefferson albeit a slightly poor man's version of it.

I think it's debatable whether he qualifies. If you consider under the radar to mean someone that the average NFL fan doesn't know, then no he does not qualify. If you consider it to mean someone that everyone seems to think will be trash, then I think he fits the bill.

The media narrative ever since the trade has hyped up Stafford more than he deserves (and I'm a huge Stafford fan) and hyped down Goff way more than he deserves. I just don't think that will equate to what is seen on the field. I think Stafford will be a borderline top 10 QB (around his average performance with Detroit) and Goff will be a borderline top 16 QB (around his average performance with LA). And if that difference is worth two 1sts and a 3rd, well thank you very much.

I'm going with Tyrell Williams. He was a 1,000 yard receiver when he was coached by Lynn. He's 6'4 and has the same size Golladay had. He averages 16 YPC for his career and averaged more yards of separation than any Lions receiver last year. I don't think this receiving is as bad as some make it out to be. They have speed and big play ability which should compliment Hockenson and St Brown. They are by no means #1 receivers but I think Williams can have a nice year.

I don’t know about under the radar but my most important player to breakout is Jeff Okudah.  It would be a huge boost to the rebuild if he could become a solid corner in year two with a future trending toward the pro bowl level was expected when taken at #3.

I was gonna go Okudah as well, but I figured a lot of eyes will be on him so I didn't think of him as under the radar.

For that, I'll go with Amani Oruwariye. With a simpler defensive scheme, the fact that we don't have Patricia calling defensive plays, a stouter DL that should be able to put pressure on QBs, and (I agree with you) an improved Okudah, I think Oruwariye may end up seeing quite a few balls thrown his way. I like his chances of improving.
