2021 Draft

Recommended Posts

Draft lottery June 2nd.

Draft in late June.

The Wings will draft 6th or 7th going into the draft. Likely 6th unless the Canucks fail to pick up 3 points in their final 6 games (or pick up 3 points only, without winning a game). Expansion Seattle is given 3rd best odds.

Their will be two draws this year, for picks 1 and 2, can move down no more than 2 spots.

Winning the draft lottery has no downside this year. Starting next year, a team can on,y move up vis lottery twice in a five year span

i'd almost be happier if they dont win this year because the next two drafts have better top line players.

yzerman will have to decide if they go all in on the kids next year and loses bigly or if he spends some cash on some vets (or makes trades) to set them up to be good enough to make a run at the playoffs.

dougie hamilton?  try to deal for eichel at a discount?

as for this draft, it sounds like as long as they stay in the top 6 they should get one of the top prospects, if (when?) they fall out of the top 6 they will be in the next tier.

last year was the year they got mightily screwed.  this year's draft doesnt have that uber prospect like last year (or the next two years).  lots of guys who could be very good, but no franchise altering players.

Yzerman's building this team up. I think there's very little chance that we don't improve a bit next year. Too hard to guess by how much... Not to mention, I'm in the firm belief that Seider spends most of next year, if not all, with the Wings. Same with Veleno and Vrana (not the same issue as the rooks, just he was partial due to the trade..).

I still think Hronek and Cholo can improve as well...

Plus maybe a healthy Bertuzzi, a 'normal' Larkin, Rasmussen becoming steadier - there is a lot of change momentum already built in for next season.

but is there enough of a foundation to make a splash in free agency and add to it?

also, i think a lot of the wings' "improvement" this year is because of the ultra defensive and conservative style they play more than an actual improvement on the ice.  plus yzerman brought in some capable vets to help.

i dont think its a given that the team improves again next year points wise.  they may take a step back if theyre playing a ton of youngsters next year and they have a coach who opens things up a little more.

i mean, look at their power play.  they were god awful.  not just bad, but seemingly incapable of making basic hockey plays.  it was ridiculous.

The PP futility is the result of no #1 line level offensive players. You can turn that around with 3 guys. But I wouldn't disagree that it is the biggest unknown. If Yzerman believes Larkin snaps back, If Betruzzi's problems are not career threatening, then you add one decent FA and your PP is back in business because you are back to having a real NHL #1 line - bingo bango. If Yzerman sees a deeper deficit, then yeah  - who knows?

They couldn't even get it (the PP) set up in the offensive zone... the little I saw of it.

But yeah, a couple key guys and all of a sudden the PP is back to being a weapon.

I'm going to guess Vrana is going to be on the PP quite a lot next year.

And I get what Buddha is saying, there may be a few steps backward next year, not everything is going to be steps forward by every single player...

But I also think on the other point, about Stevie signing key FA's/ Vets, or trading for them... That goes back to my point earlier... that Stevie isn't taking a step backward. He's going to aggressively add talent/ vets wherever he is able to. I don't know how much $$$ that means, but he ain't gonna be shy...

I want a top-shelf Goalie find... on my early Christmas wish list...

the goalies were pretty good this year.

goalies are like relief pitchers, varies from year to year and you can almost find a good one on the market every season.  no need to overpay in years or draft capital.

if im the wings, im more worried about finding guys who can score, the team can prevent other teams from scoring by just playing the same boring, safe hockey they played all this year.  take no chances and hope you get lucky and score.

I guess my concerns are:

1) Greiss is 36 next year and Bernier is 33 and an UFA

2) No long-term starter on the roster.

3) Top-notch goalies seem harder to find than finding an offensive player.

4) We have several up and coming defenseman and offensive rookies, and Steve can always find/ sign an offensive player or two. I'm not really worried about this area... just in a holding pattern until we see what Stevie Y thinks are the solutions in 2021. I think both internal growth (even by defenseman) and a signing or two will help the offense a lot...

Which brings me back to goalie.

No long-term solution.

I'd like to see Steve make a find here. It's on my Christmas wish list.

what goalie signed to a long term deal has been worth the money through the contract?  not many.

goalie is the least of my concerns and i wouldnt overpay for dregher or anyone else on the market.

they have petruzzelli (sp) who played well in college last year if you dont want to sign bernier to a short term deal again.

Draft lottery tonight.
7pm ET on NBCSN and Sportsnet.

the nhl will mock us by giving us the #1 pick in a year when there is no superstar player to draft.

either that or they'll find a way for us to pick 9th...

I believe the Wings can draft either 1,2,6,7 or 8. Would be 1 or 2 if they win one of the two lottery slots. 6 if the lottery winners are teams ahead of them in the pre-draft order. 7 or 8 if a lottery winner or winners is team below them.

I am not sure about winning it but I think the Wings are going to move up.

ummm....havent you been paying attention?

i suppose the fact that they didnt move DOWN for the first time ever is akin to them moving up?
