Down on the farm 2021

Recommended Posts

I figured we should make a thread dedicated to the farm teams since many of us are probably going to be keeping a closer eye on them than we are the Tigers.  Here's all the scores from tonight's action.

Not a lot going on from any true prospects.  Manning gave up 4 runs in 5 innings and struck out 6 and Riley Greene had a couple hits for Erie.   Wencel Perez was the real bright spot going 4-5 with a HR in Lakeland.

Another bright spot is that Torkelson had 3 k's and is now basically ready for the Tigers.

The Tigers added Kenny Graham to head up player development mostly for position players and Dan Hubbs for pitchers at the end of 2019. They also created player development coaching positions for each team and filled those at the end of 2019 and also added one roving hitting coordinator from Driveline. So, this will be the first season to see if the tweaks Avila made to player development has any positive effect. We didn't really go all the way- we still have some traditional coaches as hitting and pitching coaches or coordinators at various levels. Dombrowski and the Phillies went all in on Driveline on their overhaul, but Avila has gone with blending modern methods with some old school coaches. I'm a little worried about West Michigan's setup, but I'm hopeful they will prove me wrong. We have so many of our best prospects there that we can't afford them to be screwed up.

That's a nice way to filter through the scoreboard.

Joe Jimenez gave up a bomb but got the save.  Basically he's the secret agent who cuts all the wires rather than try to figure out which one is the current and which is the ground.

It was hit on his first pitch.

On the bright side, he threw 11 strikes on 15 pitches after that, and he did strike out one batter.

I like my metaphor even more when you tell me that.

cristian stewart and joe jiminez (and likely daz cameron) are all going to be good at triple a because they are good triple a players.

but that's all they are.  they arent good major league players and probably never will be.

“I think the home runs and the stats won’t show it, but my fastball command I thought was great,” Manning said. “After the first two innings I feel like they put an approach together just not to swing at any breaking-ball stuff, and rightfully so. I wasn’t spotting it up. I wasn’t using it well. It was just a good approach on them, and I’m gonna go work for the next four days to get it right for Sunday.”

As we’ve seen with Manning in spring training and last year in summer camp, he can’t afford to be off with his curveball.

“I threw some strikes, and it just caught too much plate,” Manning said. “That stuff, in years past I’d be able to get away with, and I won’t be able to get away with it from here on out. So it’s all good stuff to learn from.”

I was concerned with Tork coming out of Spring Training, where he K’d 50% of the time.  This was on the heels of a struggle during last year’s alternate site activity.

There is a list of college, can’t-miss hitting prospects who missed (Eric Munson, Matt LaPorta, Jeff Clement, Dustin Ackley, etc).

Hope he doesn’t join this list.

I'm mildly concerned about Tork only cause of our history of developing guys.  If he was with any other team I'd chalk it up to the weird season last year or just pressing a bit due to the pressure of being the first pick but since we have a history of either not progressing guys or just making them worse it makes me a little nervous.

I'm not sure Cameron has ever been good at AAA.

What do people think about Jason Foley?  He blew away 3 straight batters last night in the 8th for the Mud Hens.  Long-armed slinger, playing above A-ball for the first time.  Had TJ in 2018.

Just grasping at straws for the bullpen situation.  Erasmo Ramirez does seem more-or-less ready to replace someone on the 40, but maybe they're going to wait for a week of MiLB action before pulling the trigger on anything?

It’ll be interesting to see how soon they make moves.  Depending upon who starts well in Toledo, there should be plenty of opportunities to move up to Detroit.

He also didn't play in 2 years and was facing professional pitching for the first time. Let's give him a bit mroe than 10 games before we worryr
