Does Al Avila make it to Memorial Day 2021

Recommended Posts

I keep trying to set up a poll and I can't get it to work.  Answer in the thread instead.

My vote is no.  He's gone.

Heart says no, head says yes.

I know that's a bit of a non-answer, but until proven otherwise, I don't trust Chris I to do the right thing.

Steve Y coming back was the right thing.  I can't imagine the scenario that would be similar though.

I cant imagine Chris I ever doing the right thing.  He is the new William Clay Ford Sr, and Avila is the new Russ Thomas.

The right thing is for that smarmy family to sell and double down on drinking and driving which they appear to be good at.

Not that it will change Chris's behavior, but some of the frank commentary coming from Dan Dickerson and Jim Price about how bad this team is playing could potentially get awkward down the road.

At some point Chris Illitch is only a caretaker to a century's old franchise that spans several generations of the city.  He could move the team to some horrid place where he could make more money but really the team belongs to us.  Not them.  Intervene.  Jan6 the Tigers.

We pile on Shep, but Dan and Jim have a lot more service time in their roles and probably have more leash to be honest about the product on the field. That's part of why you hear them get critical

But yeah, I don't want to get into too much Kremlinology, but listening to them, they clearly know how bad it is

Yeah, I cannot blame Shep, he is what he is.  The cable TV announcing is kind of hit-or-miss at this point.

Avila makes it past Memorial Day unless the prospects in the minors just suck out loud.

I thought Shepard would have grown into his position better, but that seems doubtful now.  The leash thing kind of makes sense, although what are the Tigers going to do if Morris/Gibson got as honest as Dickerson/Price?  I think the other variable is that the radio audience might have a higher content of die hard fans as a percentage of its ratings than TV, but that’s just a bit of a guess.  My guess is based on less devoted fans needing visuals to keep their attention, but again, it’s just a wild guess on my part.

I think he makes it through the year and then is quietly removed.

He will be bumped "up" to team President and a new operating manager will be hired who will clean house.

That will be nice...firing the incompetent GM that the owner kept around and didnt provide the proper support to is kind of like Jason putting the bloody machete down.  You know theres a spear or pick axe or polo mallet with some kid's name on it nearby.

The Tigers have one of the worst TV broadcast teams in MLB, although Dickerson is easily top 5 among radio play-by-play announcers. I think Mario and Rod were more middle of the pack and good enough, but Shepard is just bad at his job. I sympathize with Gibson because I think his illness effects his performance in some ways, but Morris is awful and doesn't really offer any unique insight.

I think that he is doing exactly what he is being paid to do, go through the motions, put on a show. Make it look like the organization gives a damn, and then take the blame for the smoldering dung pile

I see AA as the kind of guy in HR who does the annual performance reviews, and all through your interview he's telling you how he's  right there along side  you,  your #1 fan,...yet his performance bonus is dependent upon how well he controls cost.

The losing is going to take it's toll on any TV team. On radio it's a little different because the guys can project whatever emotion they want to. Ernie could keep you happy listening to him regardless of what the play on the field was doing, Dan also maybe to a somewhat lesser degree. But on TV you have the all failure right in your face. You can't really project that you are having a good time in the booth over the terrible scenes the video is providing. Well maybe Bob Uecker can. So on that score I have some sympathy for Shepherd. But more generally - apart from not knowing what to do with the disaster on the field, what Shepherd needs to be good is to not work with with an ex-player. On the few occasions he has not had a player in the booth he is 1000% better. He has a baseball brain and he lets you see it. But put him next to Morris or  Gibson and he turns into a fawning caricature of 12 yr old fan.

Actually I think the guy who deals the worst with the losing is Gibson. He gets into a pretty terrible rut with the constant 'gotta do 'X' here now" litany.

Unfortunately yes. The “removal promotion “ others have mentioned seems very possible.  Probably just do Chris can have someone explain why he is not spending. That will be his main job.
