Team improved this year.   A long way to go, but the right moves seem to be taking place.

They haven't necessarily done it consistently. but they do seem to have learned as team how to be hard to score against - unlike in the recent past when they seemed have no clue what to do in their own end. With a talent upgrade like Seider and maybe a FA they could actually end up a good defensive team. Hard to guess what the offense might be next season. Taking just Velano, Vrana, maybe Berrgen, and a healthy Bertuzzi (if we get one)  and a Larkin at 100%,there's effectively 40% of the O side roster rolled over from where they were much of this season.

Thomas Greiss got off to a terrible start,.  If he had been his career normal the Wings probably win another 4 games or so.   He finished exceptionally strong.   It was a strange year for him.

First 17 games    1-11-4   .883

Second 17 games  7-4-4  .936

3 out of the four of those 2nd half losses the SV% was .909  .941 and .931

This offseason is about drafting and development, the Salary Cap will probably drop anyway, but the next season the team should have a lot of their young players up and they'll have some cap space and I think that's when Stevie might go after a couple of really good free agents.   I'll be happy to see Filppula, Neilson and Helm off the books.    It will be interesting to see who Seattle might take, if anyone.

Stevie loaded with draft picks and I think Vrana is better than Mantha.

Is Mo Seider better than Jack Hughes?   More impactful?   There is so much buzz about him.  He'll be up next year, maybe from the start.

For the Wings, probably yes. I think Mantha can be very good but for now he has a narrow skill set. On the Caps where they are good enough end to end to reduce his responsibilities to getting open for shot attempts he will probably do a lot of what they want him to do, which is score. The Wings were not ready for that player - and especially with Bertuzzi out and Larkin at half speed. Under Yzerman they may not even want that player when they can use him - time will tell.

I don't know what the divisions are going to look like next year. If they go back to the old alignment, we will be even further behind with Toronto coming back in. Yzerman is an excellent executive but how do you strike the balance between losing/bad culture and waiting for the unicorn asset(#1 pick in the right year/free agent)?

i dont think the red wings should trade what it would take to trade for eichel.

seems like the teams best situated to deal for him would be the kings or the rangers.

Maybe within 2-3 years if they don't have lottery luck.

The herniated disc in his neck won't help his value.

5 years ago the Leafs finished last in the NHL.  This week won only their 2rd regular season division title since 1967(!) and I hate to say it are a Cup contender. How many players still remain from that 2016 team? 3.  William Nylander, Morgan Reilly, Zach Hyman. They did already have Marner in the system in 2016 and they would draft Auston Matthews that summer.
