Grading the 2018 Lions Draft

Recommended Posts

Because it's unfair to grade a draft until about 3 years.....................

Round 1:  C/G Frank Ragnow -    I give it an A-.  He's really good.  He's on the cusp of pro bowl.  Great pick

Round 2: RB Kerryon Johnson   C.   Load of promise,  flashes of being good but too many injuries and he seems like an odd man out now

Round 3: S Tracy Walker,  B   He's been a solid contributor.  It's hard to judge since he has been coached by one of the 5 worst coaches in the NFL since 1980.

Round 4:   DL  DeShawn Hand  B-   Got off to a decent start, but has tailed off the last couple of years,  Again, I think it could be a sign of either bad coaching or not having Snacks around to cover the blemishes, and lets remember, Snacks walked away from the game because of Matt Patricia

Round 5: OL  Tyrell Crosby  B   Is he great?  Not be any means, but he is a serviceable and useful OL that brings some versatility and depth,  fine for a Round 5 pick

Round 7: FB Nick Bawden  B  Kind of hard to judge.  I guess if you have a 7th rounder that sticks with the team and can even be so-so, you've done alright.

Overall

B

I am usually very critical of the Lions drafts, but this was probably the best of Bob Quinn's tenure.  I think they could have gotten even more out of this class with a halfway decent coach and since, as of now, they are all still here, maybe we'll see that.

ragnow: A

all pro player, the only issue is that he plays a less than premium position (this is a theme for quinn).

johnson: D

a couple good outings as a rookie but never healthy and now is an also ran who is not likely to be in the team next year.  they had to spend another second round pick on his replacement last year.  that's bad.

walker: C.  good for a year and then bad.

Hand: C.  good for half a year and then never healthy and then bad.

Crosby.  A-.  getting a part time starter and genuinely adequate nfl player from a fifth round pick is very good.

Bawden: B.  nice role player, i guess.

overall: B-

I wouldn't call Walker and Hand bad just yet.  Lets see what a halfway decent coach can do with them.

Because we're grading the draft I think it very fair to include the round in which a player was picked.  Generally I agree with you MCS on most things, but I'd make a couple of minor modifications:

Johnson is a D+ because I expect more out of a second round.

Crosby I'm going to agree with Buddha: A-... a 5th rounder who can start if necessary? Yes please.

On Hand I'm going to give an Incomplete.  I'd like to see what he does this year before giving a final grade.

Ragnow: A.... Can't expect anymore out of a 1st round pick. He could be a centerpiece of the team for the next decade.

Johnson: F... Whether they get a late pick for him or not, a second round RB should not be competing for a 3rd-string spot three years after the draft. RBs can be found late in the draft, and if you're taking one that early they should PRODUCE. Lest we forget that we traded up (with the Patriots, because of course) for this selection.

Walker: C... Willing to give him a shot with Campbell and company, but I also wish I had seen more than we have.

Hand: C... I'm not sure he will make the team with the new additions. Again, I'm willing to give him a shot, and in the 4th round I can't be livid that he may not make the team three years later with a new regime, but still... meh.

Crosby: A... Very useful player. Cannot complain for a 5th round value.

Bawden: B... I have no real comment here. He's a fullback. He was a 7th round pick. Whatever.

Overall: B... There was a real hit, a solid get, and a sprinkling of "meh". For the Quinntricia era, I can't complain too much, because it definitely could have been worse.
