Drafting in the Al Avila ERA (as GM & Asst. GM) Spoiler: It's not good

The more I read through this thread, and recent stories along these lines in other media, the more I wonder whether Chris Ilitch is prepping the Detroit Tigers for a sale.

..

oddly enough, the way things are put together now, parking would be an interesting knot to solve in a sale of the Tigers. Who would want a venue where another org controls all the parking? Conversely, unless you sold the whole operation it would not make sense for Olympia Inc to part with the parking that also serves LCA.

I'm sure they could write in a sweetheart deal on the parking in which the new owner gets a decent cut of baseball parking profits without having to put up any capital for repairs or improvements.

When Dan Gilbert divested from the Casino business I thought for sure he was getting set to buy the Tigers?   Why else would he opt out.  I mean you can't own a Casino and a baseball team and that's why Marion Illitch never ever had anything to do with the Tigers, right?

Anyway, not long after that Gilbert had his stroke, so even if that was the plan, I can understand why it stopped.

It did sort of look like the planets were aligning at one point for Gilbert purchase. But talk about frying pan into the fire - if not for LeBron James deciding he wanted to win a title at Home, the Cavs would have been a way longer running joke than the Tigers.

I think that's going to end pretty soon.  You can't partner with gambling organizations and pretend to be against gambling.

Sure you can.    Just because you work with gamblers doesn't mean people directly involved in the game should be in that business.

Manfred came right out and said he wants to market the game and even design the game around gambling.  How is that not being directly involved in the game?

I don't think a sale is imminent. The Tigers from 2011-2017 stuck out like a sore thumb in the Forbes numbers operating in the red. That was far from the norm. Just restoring things to where they should be.

But who said working with people who run games is working with gamblers? People who run games of chance are operating the lowest risk, surest thing there is going. The games are designed for constant percentage return no matter who wins and loses and running them is essentially risk free. Way less chance involved than in trying to win baseball games anyway! 🤔

I agree with this, and I also don't believe that a corporation can own a casino and a major league team and pretend they are owned by wholly separate entities that have nothing to do with each other. They're both Ilitch, so how can the money not go into a big family pot?
