Mantha traded to Washington

I think with Mantha the expectations grew because of the level of play he flashes but never becomes his norm. That's probably why the Caps gave up what they did -- to test the theory it could become his norm.

So... I'm happy with this return.

And sending off Mantha.

Let the Caps take their shot at bringing out the best in Mantha. Maybe they will...

i think the book on mantha coming into that draft was that he was a great physical talent, but he coasted a lot and didnt give consistent effort.

i think that's still true.  he was the wings most talented player...

...when he wanted to be.

That never, ever, changed.

Anyone know who Vrana's linemates were in Washington? In other words, are his goal/points stats inflated or legit?

A good friend of mine pays attention to hockey more than I do and is a Caps fan.  He said he wouldn't give up Vrana even-up for Mantha.  He thinks a Larkin/Vrana line would be really fast and fun to watch.  Vrana was losing playing time though and that's something he couldn't understand.  I gave him my scoop on Mantha.  New surroundings might be a good thing for both of these guys.  I still can't believe the draft picks too though.

mantha is better than vrana, imo.  bigger and stronger.  really fast.  mantha was the wings most talented player and i think he'll thrive with washington.

that said, i still think its a good trade because of the draft capitol and that waahington and detroit are in different places right now, but i dont agree that washington got fleeced.  i think the value is pretty equal with the wings getting an extra draft pick to take on panik's salary.

Watch Mantha blow up now that he's playing on a winner.

But I still do this trade.

Vrana supposedly has exceptional talent. But yes, Mantha is bigger and stronger and fast and talented. I still go with Vrana, the 1st this year and 2nd next year, and from the Wings' perspective Panik is a useful player to be used anywhere needed and is a warm body. Just needed to be done as part of this rebuild effort.

A high cost for the Caps. They get fleeced if Mantha doesn't do any better than what he did in Detroit. But if he blows up... that will make the high cost worth it. Oh, and another Stanley or two... yeah, more than worth it.
