I'm surprised they got Vrana and one pick. I guess if you are a good team you figure you can put people around Mantha that will lead to him being the dominant player we keep waiting for him to be here.

If I'm Yzerman I'm happy. Even if Mantha turns into Mario Lemieux he wasn't doing it here and a 1st and 2nd is a great return for player that his been in the minus for his whole career here.

Vrana is a legit player...throw in the draft picks and you have it.

Vrana is a year younger and has more points than Mantha this year.  See what his contract will be this offseason.

Great trade for Detroit. The 1st round draft pick and Vrana are the two most important pieces in this deal. We are going to have a good amount of high end draft capital to work with this year.

Mantha always was tantalizing, but has always seemed to leave the Wings wanting more - recall Jimmy D's  comments early in career. At 26 he is what he is. A good player, potentially very good, but not a building block.

Damn, Stevie crushed this.   Anthony Mantha is 5 years into his career, he isn't supposed to still have potential , by this point he was supposed to be one of the stars on this team and he never truly graduated to that.

Wow, the amount of draft picks next year is insane.

Anyone know who Vrana's linemates were in Washington? In other words, are his goal/points stats inflated or legit?

The Red Wings have 7 picks in top 3 rounds in the upcoming draft and 2 second rounders in 2022.

Yzerman continues to create opportunities for a turnaround. They need lottery luck to fast track the rebuild. However, this draft is really down on talent so it doesn't matter if they win the lottery.

In the future, it would help.

Yeah under the new rules limiting lottery wins I kindiv hope they don’t win it this year.

I don't know how legit this site is, but it looks like he wasn't on the ice with Ovechkin or Kusnetsov.

For that return, I might have considered giving the Caps Larkin instead of Mantha if they had insisted.

That is a serious fleecing.   Not sure why the Caps gave up that much.

Owen Power would be a phenomenal defensive building block to have no?

If they watched Mantha on the right night....

Yeah but he's not on elite level of previous top picks. The dropoff from 1-7 is pretty insignificant based on what I've heard.

Yes it reminds me of Hischier's class, from the relatively little I've read.

If this trade isnt enough to draw Drown back to the site, he's either really ticked or else has succumbed to Covid.

It's hard to know with big guys like Mantha if they mentally don't bring the energy every night they need to in order to realize the skill level they have, or if they just physically can't consistently do it. Caps are about to find out!

Mantha was supposed to be a 40 goal scorer by now.

I never expected that. At #20 overall, I'd say even when not at his best he still well outperformed his draft position.

I think with Mantha the expectations grew because of the level of play he flashes but never becomes his norm. That's probably why the Caps gave up what they did -- to test the theory it could become his norm.
