bob mcadoo.  the pistons trades two first round picks (including the #1 pick in the draft) to boston for him.

boston then traded those picks to golden state for robert parish and a #1 pick.  they used that pick to take kevin mchale.

and that, kids, is why golden state and detroit sucked for a long time.

I still don't understand that trade.  Boston signs M.L. Carr and as compensation the Pistons get McAdoo but also have to give up two picks?

Anyway, McCloskey was hired a few months later, probably because of this trade.

Lord -  forget about that one. The McAdoo move was probably even worse GM work than wasting the pick on Darko. Never cared for McAdoo enough to give up one top pick, let alone two.

We've really had some terrible team management in Det over the years.

Possible dunk of the year candidate and that isn't even the most interesting thing in the clip.

Does Ball have a jeweled Hornets pendant?  Gonna need a price check on that.

Thanks for the McAdoo discussion.  I knew of Parish and McHale to Boston thanks to Golden State.  I knew Carr was a Piston. I didn’t know McAdoo was a common bond for all of that.

Boston signed Carr and Detroit wanted McAdoo as compensation. So they worked out the trade, and of course it wound up being the number 1 pick overall. Boston traded the pick to GS for the #3 pick and took McHale. GS took Joe Barry Carroll, a 7 foot center from Purdue. JBC had an underachieving career marked by weight control issues that earned him the nickname Joe Barely Cares.

I think they traded the picks for Parish and the pick they used to take McHale.

Such a fun tangled web.

Josh Smith is a fun one too.  We traded the Hawks the pick they used to draft Smith.

Quote

February 19, 2004: As part of a 3-team trade, traded by the Detroit Pistons (as a future 2004 1st round draft pick) with Željko Rebrača and Bob Sura to the Atlanta Hawks; the Atlanta Hawks traded Rasheed Wallace to the Detroit Pistons; the Boston Celtics traded Chris Mills to the Atlanta Hawks; the Boston Celtics traded Mike James to the Detroit Pistons; and the Detroit Pistons traded Chucky Atkins, Lindsey Hunter and a 2004 1st round draft pick (Tony Allen was later selected) to the Boston Celtics.

June 24, 2004: Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1st round (17th pick) of the 2004 NBA Draft.

July 10, 2013: Signed as a free agent with the Detroit Pistons.

You have a perverse sense of fun.

But yeah, NBA future picks get traded so frequently, you can really go down a heck of a rabbit hole.  Especially if you go through transactions prior to the draft being reduced to only 2 rounds.  Good grief, 10 rounds as recently as 1984, 7 in 1986.  That’s just crazy to think of.

Looked at the box score and damn near thought the Clippers were the Pistons.  Jackson, Morris, and Kennard all started for LAC tonight.
