Casey Mize: Broken or Funkhouser 2.0?

Recommended Posts

Everyone who has ever had TJ is broken, apparently.

Can we discuss what the word "broken" means in reference to this thread? I'm under the opinion that it means "broken" and can't currently perform.

I think the Tigers will take Leiter or Rocker if they are actually available at #3. Otherwise, I assume they will take Lawlar and he'll be the SS of the future. I think they'll take at least one high upside arm with the comp balance pick or the early second round pick, as well.

Fetter and company will eventually figure it out with Mize or no one really can.

9Ks in 4 IP today.    But do we want him throwing so many pitches, is he supposed to be a strikeout pitcher?

If he's not walking anyone then he can afford a few more pitches to be a SO pitcher...

right. Remember when he was being scouted and folks said his K/9 seemed low but on second look it was because his WHIP was so low he wasn't facing a 'normal' number of batters  - the K% was fine.

That too...

But I think MCS and I were concentrating on pitch count...

Also on that basis... Mize may need to not only avoid walks, but also avoid high-pitch-count AB's...

I'm not advocating pitch-to-contact... But per MCS's point, Mize doesn't necessarily need to chase a K if he can get a guy to hit weak grounders.... IMO, I think that is also a part of his learning curve. Hit the strike zone, paint corners and hit all 4 quadrants and change speeds, avoid walks, and avoid long pitch count AB's by finishing a batter quickly, even if there is some PTC involved.

I think Mize can still dominate that way (was I supposed to use "dominant" there? ... I refuse bad grammar though...), get lots of K's, low WHIP, low pitch counts and ERA and long outings, etc... the Greg Maddux way.

I still think that's who he needs to emulate... As best he can...

Yup. Esp if you can throw 97 and have the command not make mistake in the middle of the plate and can throw any kind of breaking ball, you should be a successful MLB pitcher. It's great to be a guy who has so much stuff you can also get away with most of your mistakes (a helpful talent for no hitter's for instance) but it's not the only way to be successful.

its funny how mize can have 5 bad outings and it means nothing, but then has one good outing and it means he's totally fixed.

god bless optimism.

hopefully he continues it.

It remains to be seen if he can throw strikes in repeated outings, but at least he has shown he still can throw strikes and the rough outing last week taken together with this one showed that he still has the 97 in his pocket that everyone has wondered about since the sore arm at the end of 2019. That part has been pretty promising to see I think. Then again, with Fulmer hitting 95 maybe they had a hot gun out there today.....🙄

That's what Spring training is all about.  When you do bad, it doesn't matter.  When you do good, it means you have found yourself.  Once opening day comes, it's all forgotten.

Hinch just announced that Mize made the team and will of course be in the rotation, Fulmer to the bullpen.

Holland made the team too.  So, does that make Alexander the odd man out?  Jimenez?

14 pitchers? But someone will have a short stay anyway unless Turnbull is actually sick.
