2022 MLB Draft (the grass is GREEN'er on the TANK side)

Recommended Posts

Obviously this is way too early since the season hasn't even started yet...

And hopefully, the team makes enough progress, and can call up kids in September that show well, that we don't even have to consider the #1 spot...

But... just in case (we can revisit around August).

PS: I just wanted to lock in my AWESOME cleverness with the title...

The time to tank is over. Very much over.

Most likely.

This was just in case...

and everyone was trying to come up with a clever phrase involving Green regardless if tanking or not...

Just a bit of fun...

I would like to think that the time for tanking is over. Realistically, I think as long as AA and Chris are running the show, we’re tanking.

Well then they really effed up in hiring a manager like Hinch. Have you heard anything he's said all Spring? He's talking about winning now, and unless I'm mistaken, I bet the owner and GM understand there will be uber pressure from the skipper to get players that..........win.

I am sure Chris Ilitch is shaking in his boots.

If you’re an optimist, you are often disappointed by this team. If you are a pessimist, you are always pleasantly surprised.

As I have said, I want to believe.  As long as Chris can make bucks with revenue sharing and keeping a low payroll...

Video of Greene.  He certainly has a sweet swing but he looks like a big kid to me already.   He's listed at 6'3 215 but he appears even bigger than that to me. Considering he is only a HS Junior I wonder if there is concern he will grow out of CF?

Can we get a moderator to drink the kool aid and cancel this thread?

No.

It still has value for the draft next year. And we'll see where we end up position-wise by the end of the year.

On a WAG: 9th to 12 draft spot.

I think they be will around the 5th pick, but it wouldn't take a lot to get to 9 or 10.

I think it would take a a decent amount of injury bad luck for the Tigers to get the #1 pick. They really don't have the worst roster or lineup anymore as a baseline and there is also a good amount of potential on the team to exceed projected preseason win totals due to uncertainty around how Skubal and Mize will perform.

Normally you look at a team and bridge them from one season to the next.  And you kind of keep in mind what other teams have done.  I don’t know how you use 2020 as a baseline and bridge to this season.  I don’t think there’s a question they’re better than the last two seasons.  Or, I guess it’s better to say that they should be better, the potential is certainly there.

Looking at 2019, there were 4 100 loss teams, a 95, a 94, a 93,....   Detroit was 47-114, .292.  Last season they were 23-35 which would be about 64-98.  You think about it, going from 47 to 64 wins is an increase of 17 wins, but is it significant?  64 wins is still pretty bad, it’d have been a 5th overall draft pick using 2019 standings, it’s a 3rd using 2020 standings.

These first two games were fun.  I just have a hard time seeing the roster winning more than 40% of its games, but I definitely could be wrong.

They're likely going to win all of the games in Houston.  So there is that.

From Keith Law on Leiter:

Quote

• The decision to skip Leiter’s turn in the rotation wasn’t announced to scouts until Saturday morning, a few hours before the 2 p.m. game. The email to scouts said it was “nothing serious at this point but we are monitoring his inning workload,” which doesn’t line up with the choice to skip his turn hours before the game. If you’re going to limit someone’s workload, you make that call days before the start, not hours. Leiter has been struggling in his last few starts, giving up three homers and four walks in four innings last week against Florida and giving up a pair of homers in five innings against Mississippi State the week before. He allowed four runs in each outing. Maybe he’s tired and needs a week off, but the timing of this decision is unusual, and now even more eyes will be on Leiter if and when he retakes the mound.
