2021 Offseason

Signings will be predicated on how quickly they broom out the old to bring in the new...

I mean, they gotta field a team.

But if they bottom feed the FA signings, at least for this year... how does that affect the compensatory...? Doesn't it have to get above a certain level...?

i agree with one caveat: if they sign a bunch of free agents they risk losing the comp pick for okwara and golladay.  or at least having it lowered from a third to something below that.

For sure, I was thinking of that too so maybe bargain bin shopping would be more prudent. They could also get compensatory picks from Jones and Okwara as well so something to keep in mind. I hope they sign Okwara though, he's young enough to fit their timeline.

Either way, tagging Golladay would create too many complications. It would upset the player who was already unhappy with the situation as is, it would use up all available cap space and then some and then they'd have to make a decision again next season when he'll be speeding towards 30 years old. Tag and trade wouldn't have likely brought back much more than the projected compensatory 3rd rounder either if at all so... it was the right move to move on.

The receiver they take at 7 (assuming they go that route) could quite likely be as good as Golladay in the next two years and for like a third of the cost. This isn't taking into account the possibility of Golladay declining in his late 20s, early 30s as most receivers do. With the extra money, they could have 1st pick receiver plus free agent like Reynolds or Samuel or Davis or fill other areas of need.

I could see taking two receivers in the draft this year... they're available.

Also, does that mean all 3 receivers are at the top of their board? Or does Parsons or Sewell still have a chance...?

I wasn't originally ready to move on from Golladay but there's too much logic not to, that I didn't even consider so, yeah... time to move on...

I don't think the Galladay news changes much. It's clear they are going full rebuild. So they're gonna take the guy they think helps best in 20022 and 2023. You can alway take a wide out in round 2 or do a common thing with two first round picks in 2022, take a QB at 1 and a WR with the rams pick at 27.

The question for the Lions becomes which group (on a very basic idea, you could always get lucky and find a great WR in round 2 this year which would change things)

1.

Parsons, QB 1 next year and WR at 27

or Smith, QB 1, top rated defense player at 27

I'm thinking more along the lines of getting one of the top 3 WR's at #7 as they are all fast and athletic, getting a fast and athletic DT and LB'er with their 2nd round pick and first 3rd round pick this year; and then finding a slot receiver with the second 3rd rounder because there seems to be a lot of quality WR's available this year, in general. And there are still two more picks after or around the 2nd WR for Holmes to suss out a couple more gems...

I'm not worried about a QB1 outside of Goff, or next year's draft, until...

next year.

No I mean drafting a QB first overall next year when I say QB 1. They are gonna be bad this year so the loss of Gallady won't likely impact whether or not they take a WR this year. Its not a situation where we're OK everywhere else and need a plug and play WR. Nope, they got needs all over. Personally I still perfer a LB at 7 and then next year take a QB first overall and a WR with the rams pick.

Goff wouldn't be any better with Kenny sitting at home playing video games. If he dogged his injury waiting for a contract extension, imagine how bad he would dog it under the franchise tag? No reason to pay one player that kind of money during a rebuild. Especially one who negotiates thru Twitter when he finally has a good game. Let some other team take the cap hit...he may need to play cheap for a year to prove he can stay healthy.

I was checked out on Kenny when he quit on the team last year.

But I gather from the fact that they didn’t restructure Goff and/or tag/re-sign Kenny that it is sink or swim for Goff.

They will almost certainly pick a receiver with their first rounder, but with the offense being entirely new, it seems unlikely that we can expect a big rookie season.

Would the Lions dare draft another CB in the first round?  I don't think they'd take one at 7 but if they do trade down to the mid 1st they could probably get 1 of Farley or Surtain.

Spelman talked about building the defense from the outside in and having potential 2 lock down corners would go a long way to doing just that. (Yes I know Okudah looks the furthest thing from that but the potential is still there)

Or, they haven't restructured Goff because he isn't officially a Lion yet.

Excellent news! Okwara was our best defensive player, our best pass rusher, and is still only 25. Really excited to have him back.

What an off-season thus far! A brand new front office, two draft gurus added into the fold to run the show in Holmes and Dorsey, Stafford traded for multiple 1st round picks, Romeo Okwara brought back without a franchise tag. I've never enjoyed the Lions this much in my life and we haven't even hit the draft yet.

I would guess that's the end of their big free agent spending.

How long does it take to become official?  Seems like this was weeks and weeks ago... I mean, I know they have to do the physicals and all, but why haven't those been done?

League starts on Wednesday.  That’s when they can announce any trades.

Ah... okay, I hadn't consider that it has to happen on the new league year.

Reading the contract is "worth up to" $39 million with incentives. Could be a team friendly deal. Interesting they chose to sign Okwara and let Golladay walk.
