Cause bettors can be lazy, atleast in the offseason like this.  They see the Lions only won 5 games with Stafford and Golladay last year so that means they are going to be even worse this year.

The problem with that thinking is that Stafford wasn't particularly good last year, Golladay was mostly injured and the coaching staff was atrocious.

If you were a Jets fan and ended up with Zach Wilson instead of Trevor Lawrence would you still feel this way? Those late season wins by the Jets did nothing to advance the franchise, won't carry over to the next season, and cost them the chance at getting Trevor Lawrence. If the Lions were in that situation, as a fan, I would be upset we missed out on Lawrence because of a meaningless late season win.

Even with that generational situation, I still need to have trust in my GM and coach that they can find the Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Dak Prescott outside the top five as the franchise's next QB. I can't rely on just being bad enough to get a top five pick. Lawrence is likely to be a very good player, but I would put even money on one of Wilson/Lance/Fields/Jones/Trask/Mills/etc. being just as good or better, and he's not going to go anywhere if the Jaguars org can't find talent throughout the draft to surround him with. The good teams can find talent throughout the draft, win now, and continue to win. The Lions top five lucked into Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh, and look how much success that brought them.

I'm not saying I didn't understand why Jets fans were mad when they won two fairly meaningless games and lost out on a pretty sure thing in TLaw, I'm saying I watch and support my team because I want them to win games, not because I want them to suck now to maybe be good in a few years for a few years. I want the Steelers/Patriots/Seahawks/Saints/Chiefs to be our gauge on success - good now, good next year, good in five years, good in 10-15 years. Not the Jaguars/Jets/Texans/Lions/Browns (at least historical) gauge where they pickup a few can't miss pieces, are good for a year or two, then wallow back into being a **** team again for another decade.

vegas isnt stupid.  they like the lions to lose because the lions are going to be bad.

10.5 is a huge number and part of that is for the dumb *** bears fans to bet on da bears no matter what, but its also because vegas' numbers people have run their scenarios and the lions suck.

we do this every year.  every year we look at the lions and think, "you know what?  the oline has some nice pieces, hock is a pretty good tight end, and if the defense plays ok they could surprise some people" and every year they suck.

i'll trust vegas over us homers.

Vegas has gotten the Lions and Bears wrong before.

true.  last year they had the bears at 8.5 and the lions at 6.5.  bears won 8 and the lions won 5.

in 2019 they had the bears at 9 and the lions at 6.5.  bears won 8 and the lions won 3.

in 2018 they had the bears at 6.5 and the lions at 7.5.  bears won 12 and the lions won 6.  but those win totals were out before the bears traded for the very overrated khalil mack.  so we can give vegas a pass on that one.

if anything, vegas is always HIGH on the lions.  so we can expect 4 wins this year?  lol.

That's seems a likely effect on the casual better of having a relatively star QB on an otherwise thin team. So with a guy like Goff that gets no respect take the over, right?  🤔

Does "10-6 and win a playoff game" become "11-6 and win a playoff game" or "10-7 and win a playoff game" with the new game added? Asking for a friend. 😏

I am predicting 5-12 but I don't know.   I mean, that defense is really bad, but how much of it was the really bad coach?  I think a lot of it actually.   The guys left on the team might be quite a bit better with a better scheme.      But yeah, I want them to have a bad year.   The most interesting things to me are - Is Jared Goff better than people seem to think (I believe he is) and what kind of coach will Dan Campbell be?   I think he's going to work them hard, but do it in a way that doesn't alienate them like Patricia did.   I don't get the feeling Campbell's going to throw insults around,  he might break balls a little bit in a humorous way, but if you aren't good enough, you'll be gone, no insults needed.

Matt Patricia alienated a pro-bowl cb like Slay, who ended up getting out. I can't imagine how a rookie like Okudah could be expected to thrive in that kind of environment. I think we're going to see a much better defense, just based solely on the leadership & direction of the coaching staff.

It seems strange to me that a franchise that just pulled off a major overhaul of its football operations, bringing on a special assistant to the president in Spielman, a GM in Holmes, a special assistant to the GM in Dorsey, and a Head Coach in Campbell, had just offered more or less that entire job, for eight years, to one guy from a second rate college program.

Doesn't mean it didn't happen but it would seem strange to me if they did make him that offer. I guess it is possible that Sheila wanted to take one home run swing at this, and whiffed, settling for the committee approach they've put together. But I'm a bit skeptical of the story.

I'm also skeptical. This came from an agent or someone in Matt Campbell's circle because it obviously didn't come from the Lions. I think it is more likely that there was some sort of contact between the two and that is what Matt's agent told Speilman and Sheila it would take. They either said no or maybe, ended up picking Dan, and the story morphed to Matt's benefit.

Yes. I’m not saying an agent leaked this story, but if an agent leaked a story, this is what it would sound like.

Also, the only guy with the story can’t confirm half of the story.

Basically, this story communicates to recruits that nothing could pry Campbell away from Iowa State. And it communicates to bigger programs/NFL franchises, it’s gonna take 8/$68 to pry me away from Iowa State.

and by making the Lions the team interested the story gets read in the Ann Arbor market...

...just sayin'.
