statistically in the last two years Goff has been a slightly below average starting qb.

the lions arent going to be a good team, and they have very few receiver options.  i suspect goff will return to being average to a little below average.

that's not a terrible thing for a team like detroit, but i'd still like them to be in position to take a really good qb prospect if one is available.

I think it depends on how this super-duper O-line comes together. Any QB who ever got to the NFL could be effective when you give him time. But most OLineman take a year or two to hit stride. If Sewell comes out of the gate playing at a high level and they don't have OLine injuries, Goff should have a better than average year. But Sewell maybe won't and injuries are inevitable.

he doesnt have anyone to throw to other than a possession receiver tight end.  its going to be hard to be successful that way.  they dont have anyone to stretch the field or worry a defense with speed.

i dont think its the best position for goff to succeed.

Breshad Perriman is one of the fastest players in the league.  Kalif Raymond is a low 4.3 guy.   They can stretch the field.   Whether they can catch it is a whole other thing.

I guess their cap space ain't great, but still, there is a lot of time to sign guys before the 1st snap. Remember all those WRs taken in this draft? Law of conservation of roster space: A WR is going to get cut from some team for every one of those rookie WRs that makes a team.

You’re right that Goff has been off. And you’re probably right that the Lions will finish with a high pick.

But we will be having the same conversation about Goff next year. Is he good enough that the team could use its first (top five?) pick on a pass rusher and its first rounder from the Rams (and/or other high picks) to rebuild the WR corps?

We all trust Brad Holmes, but sometimes we forget that Holmes has traded for Goff... twice. At the very least Holmes sees Goff as someone who has a high floor.
